Following Steve Beynon’s insistence that Mark Chiverton was not told to stand down from his candidature as Labour MP or resign from his post at the council, we spoke with Mark this afternoon.
On a crackly telephone line, he told us that after the meeting he’d had with a senior council officer, which left him “bemused and devastated”, he subsequently emailed the senior officer, putting back the proposition, first reported this morning, which has never been denied.
He went on to say that his standing as a parliamentary candidate was cleared by the previous Chief Exec, Joe Duckworth, two and a half years ago.
Clearly concerned by the situation he told VB that this was the “most worrying week for me and my family for my entire 37 year working career.”
Mark has much more to say, listen to the podcast by clicking on the play button below.

Update: It might be useful to point out that as far as we’re aware, this action has nothing to do with The Leader or any other councillors.
This should be a matter between Mark and the council officers involved.
The handling of staff and day-to-day running of the council is down to the officers … and councillors are strictly forbidden to be involved with the execution. Their role is to set policy.

Shocking. This sounds to me like a rapid back pedal by some spineless (possibly lying) fool at County Hall.
Mr Chiverton is the Unison rep and very well liked. To do this is to him now is pretty low. This man has only fairly recently lost his wife and as far as I know, is raising his children alone. It beggars belief.
Offensive comment?
Poor bloke. It must have been very frightening – even more so with the reputation of this Council for underhand and bullying behaviour against staff.
Offensive comment?
There is no doubt that Beynon should be sent packing to wherever he really lives and that the Tory backbenchers should show some spirit and turf out Pugh.
Offensive comment?
I believe a prominent Tory Councillor will.
Offensive comment?
Certain things are mounting up.
Offensive comment?
Go on, you know you want to tell us more
Offensive comment?
The rumour mill is turning and the story is that Mr Pugh will be out of a job before the end of the month.Fact.
Offensive comment?
I really hope you’re right John. But then what will his replacement be like? I remember the glee when Sutton went – and then we got Pugh…
Offensive comment?
Cllr Brown? Current deputy, and wiser than many? (Brown Owl?)
Offensive comment?
that really is a scary thought!
Offensive comment?
George Brown? No!!! I really don’t think I’ll sleep very well now!
Offensive comment?
Smart money will be on Peter Bingham. Gentleman, intelligent and ruthless. You heard it here first.
Offensive comment?
He’s only been a councillor 10 minutes. (Well, since last year’s locals.)
Offensive comment?
Was Beynon The Returning Officer in the last Local Elections?
Offensive comment?
In reply to Rush, yes, Steve Beynon was the Returning Officer for the last elections.
Offensive comment?
Most councillors could be in the role 20 years and never have the skills to be a leader. Bingham has them and has a glint in his eye
Offensive comment?
Maybe all this really is a twisted ‘Coup de Pugh’…
Offensive comment?
Having known and worked with Mark for 30 years I trust his version of events as being honest and true.
Offensive comment?
Well according to Cllr Ian Ward (http://ianward.blogspot.com/) on 29th Jan he said ……we don’t want to raise council tax by any more than we need to. We are trying to close that gap by making things more efficient and reviewing closely what services we provide and what we needn’t spend money upon, like giving money to trade unions to pay for their union reps!! The Council is not broke and is not in any sort of financial trouble…. Sounds to me like he knew they were leaning on Mark!
Offensive comment?
Mark is one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. He has more compassion in his big toe than the entire tory council put together.
Chin up Mark, the ordinary people of the Island are with you. This is an appalling show of dictatorship.
Offensive comment?
Conservative Central Office will not approve of this action by Pugh who will be a liability to the party.
Offensive comment?
Can’t he report Pugh to the standards Board for this?
Offensive comment?
It might be useful to point out that as far as we’re aware, this action has nothing to do with The Leader or any other councillors.
This should be a matter between Mark and the council officers involved.
The handling of staff and day-to-day running of the council is down to the officers … and councillors are strictly forbidden to be involved with the execution. Their role is to set policy.
Offensive comment?
I believe the matter of Union representation was mentioned at committee this week which puts it into the members’ arena.
Offensive comment?
That’s correct, but the council are saying that there are two seperate matters here. The financial support given to trade unions is a different matter to whether Mark can stand as a parliamentary candidate.
Offensive comment?
Look at Andrew Turner`s reply. What has changed?
Offensive comment?
It’s telling though that Pugh told Turner about both “seperate matters”.
Sorry, but anybody who believes that he is not behind this with his history of duplicity is as thick as two short planks..
Offensive comment?
Davey, how do you know Pugh told Turner about both separate matters?
Offensive comment?
Sources dear boy, sources
Offensive comment?
Care to share? You seem to know more than the rest of us.
Offensive comment?
i would have thought there would be national guidelines for an employee to take out time to stand at an election and return to work after if that person didnot win the seat.
a council with national standards would permit this, maybe its the national standards which is confusing to them.
Offensive comment?
Latest word is that Mark Chiverton’s Unison members today passed a vote of no confidence in Beynon and Pugh over a wide range of matters, with this story just the icing on the cake. The clock is ticking.
Offensive comment?
The Council Debt,School Reorganization,Travel Allowance,Car Parking Fee, Student Rider, Consultants Pay.I bet you can add more and please do.It Shows what mess this Council is in.
Offensive comment?
The vote of no confidence in both Pugh and Benyon was passed. I was there.
Offensive comment?
….. massive budget cuts for services for vulnerable people…… meaning people in at least one of the voluntary services serving those people is known about so far ….. This is going to be far reaching…..
Offensive comment?
sorry typo….meaning redundancies in at least one voluntary service known about ..
Offensive comment?
The present council is collapsing before our very eyes and I blame lack of experience for much of it. The old guard Tories on the island have to step in, someone else should take command before the week ends.
A new experienced Chief Exec (for the long term please) should be top of the to-do list for a new mature Leader. Let’s hope this happens quickly. Mr Pugh should go back to the stationery shop counter where he came from. I just can’t see him being able to blow his trumpet for a good few years having made such a mess of things at County Hall. He needs a behind the scenes job.
Offensive comment?
Hmmm…from what I’m hearing tonight, unless the stationary counter has a web-cam…it’s shortly gonna be game over for somebody’s ambitions to reach a bigger audience…never mind, at least the cricket will talk to him…unless he ignores him of course.
Offensive comment?
Hope you’re right. I can’t help but think that this Tory Group, like most others, would not want to be seen to be pushed around by any evil trade union action (because of course any union would be evil in their eyes). He’s out of his depth no doubt – but if he’s a useful idiot as long as (brainier) others like Beynon and Brown can get him to do what they want, why change? I’m really hoping that your sources are better than my intuition though!
Offensive comment?
Brown is the kingpin in all of this. Get rid of Brown and eradicate the problem, Pugh is just the fall-guy.
Offensive comment?
Not what a prominent Tory says. Brown is just playing the game.
Offensive comment?
Look at Pugh when he was in Conservative Future.
