Island MP’s Response to Chiverton Case

Wednesday, 3rd February, 2010 at 2:24 pm, Isle of Wight

Election, Island-wide, Isle of Wight Council, News, Politics

Further to the news that Mark Chiverton has been asked to stand down as Labour Parliamentary Candidate or resign from his full time position at the Isle of Wight Council, we approached the Island MP, Andrew Turner, for his views.

Andrew Turner Island MPMr Turner told VB that “If Council officers are concerned about his position they should have said something long ago. Raising it a few months before a General Election is wrong, and could easily be construed as improper interference with the political process.”

In an email to Mr Turner this morning, Cllr David Pugh, Leader of the Council wrote, “officers are currently considering whether being a parliamentary candidate could in any way be in conflict with being a council employee.”

Mr Turner went on to tell VB, “Mark has been a Council employee for 37 years, Unison Branch Secretary for 12 years, stood for the Labour Party in 2005 and was selected again as their candidate in 2007. As far as I know nothing has changed recently.”

Mr Turner made it clear that he didn’t know anything about this action in advance of hearing about it.

Thank you Andrew. A rational Conservative voice as opposed to the ‘loony right’ at County Hall.

The Tories in County Hall really have come out of all this looking rather abhorrent haven’t they?

Absolutely diabolical. David Pugh should take reponsibility for this cruel and malicious blunder. Their gross insensitivity is beyond words. Do they not realise they are dealing with peoples lives? In this case the life of a widower looking after young children.
As the island’s most senior conservative, Andrew Turner should be having a quiet word with the council leader. Perhaps he could remind Pugh that they’re supposed to be compassionate conservative’s these days.

Have to find myself agreeing with shobba on this, unfortunately Pugh listens to no-one and speaks of Turner with contempt.
Shame, because the Turner man has more good sense and compassion in his big toe than Pugh will ever have.
Pugh also ignores the tory group at county hall
and some of them feel he is going way too far in his persecution of Sutton, the press release he sent out was pure bile.

      Lets hope the worms turn.

I know somebody at couty hall who has overheard Pugh speaking of Turner with what they described as “utter contempt”.

We have in Pugh an unpleasant “shallow as a puddle” little man who’s twisted and carefully constructed self assurance, arrogantly allows him to takes us all for imbeciles.

I agree with all the above. Except I don’t think it was a blunder.
With a general election in the offing, schoolboy Poo obviously thought it would be a good wheeze to BLACKMAIL Mr Chiverton into giving up his political ambitions.
Does anyone think this would have come up if Mr Chiverton had been a Tory or a Liberal candidate?
Yet again shoolboy Poo has demonstrated – like the Eton sixth former -that it’s easier to get on in the tory ranks with a pretty face.Principles don’t matter.

Don’t call Poo a public schoolboy. People who attend public schools behave far better.
Why do so many politicians who claim to be christians behave in very unchristian ways?

Should Beynon not be telling the IOW Tory councillors not to interfere with the democratic process? Is that not what he is paid for? Perhaps he should be the one considering his position. Who knows- he might be able to get a similar job in North Korea?
