If the number of tourism guides being ordered by the public is anything to go by, 2010 might just be a good year for the Island.
The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism & Industry tell us that over 5,000 copies of their 2010 Accommodation Guide have already been ordered and have apparently been well received.
As well as in paper form, they also tell us that the guide has been added as an interactive brochure on the GoWight Website.
Let’s hope the interest in the brochure is a sign of what’s to come this year.

I love the new look Accommodation guides and pocket guides, they give off a realy classy vibe for our gorgeous Island!
Offensive comment?
i think they look fantastic, but i am a bit biased seeing as they use my photos :)
Offensive comment?
totally mis-leading ..what they mean is they have sent out that number…which includes multiple copies to travel agents, the ferry companies and other outlets
Its about being seen to be doing a good job rather than actually doing one.
Offensive comment?
I don’t think that’s right, they told us that the 5,000+ copies had been requested by “potential visitors” rather than that being the number sent out to travel agents, ferry companies etc.
Offensive comment?
they said the a similar thing last year which also turned out to be a mis-direction..why not ask them to clarify that the 5000 were sent out inrespect of individual personal requests.
But I wouldn’t hold your breath

this is the first year the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce has produced the guide.
we are transparent with our figures, and are pleased to provide the following information, correct as at 10 January -
1,309 guides have so far been sent out to customers, as requested via national press campaign and GoWight website;
4,900 sent to tourist information centres across the country, at their request and approved by us.
these figures are updated every week (already another 500 sent out since then) and we share distribution figures with any advertiser.
i hope that helps to clarify the position.

so 1400 to actual peopel requesting them, not 5000.
Thank you Kevin…I still think that is a very good figure, just not quite as good as those alluded too

Personally in my opinion, the cover looks drab. Dark green? Should be more vibrant.
Offensive comment?
Given the fabulous photography inside (excellent work Jason – as is your online gallery) I’d agree that the cover is not very inspiring.
Offensive comment?
Disagree Sailor Sam – thank goodness the cover looks stylish not garish. Considering the breadth of content the whole design works a treat.
We have already had quite a bit of interest via the brochure … and will be tracking which convert to bookings with interest!
Offensive comment?
Stylish? Looks more like a brochure for a furniture store rather than a touist guide. Personally I think it looks ‘cold’ It should be brighter… like sky blue with some sunshine. I did’nt think much of the cover of last season’s pocket guide either.
Offensive comment?
I’d stick to sailing if I were you Sam. Blue is technically a cold colour.
Offensive comment?
Sunshine… blue sky… golden sands Tim; thats what I meant!
Offensive comment?
Sailor Sam, have you seen the front cover? A nice panorama of ‘Sunshine…blue sky…golden sands’!
I think that ticks all your boxes!
Offensive comment?
But there’s too much dark green! Makes it look drab but thats ONLY my opinion.
It’s hardly going to ‘jump off the shelf’ in a travel agents amongst all the other vibrant coloured brochures is it?
Offensive comment?
Sailor Sam,
but if all of the other brochures are vibrant colours and they are all fighting each other for the viewer’s attention, then this stylish ‘Olive green’ brochure will stand out very nicely from the crowd as it is so very different.
Offensive comment?
I guess that should set it apart from all the other brochures then!

Another update for you:
Accommodation Guide requests in the last week totals 804. Making the totoal request from potential visitor 2113 this does not include the TIC figure.
Offensive comment?
Now we just have to get the GO Wight site working correctly and competeing for hits with its predessor, which is still running and still getting more traffic
Offensive comment?
My word you cynics, can you not just be happy that the Isle of Wight tourism is heading in the right direction! Well done Zoe and those involved in making it so!
Offensive comment?
Hear hear!
Offensive comment?
just how do you justify that it is moving in the right direction?
Offensive comment?
No 5 how DO YOU justify its not??
Offensive comment?
The state of the attractions on the Island, the quality of the hotels, the quality of the resteraunts, the price of the ferrys, the state of our roads, the state of our beeches, the lack of foresight in the council, the lack of support from the council, the lack of funds supporting tourism from the council, the in-fighting between the council and the the new tourism officials.
This should be boom time for the Island, with a council that supports its major industry…
instead we get self congratulatory soundbites and downright mis-information.
Offensive comment?
I suggest No 5 that if this is your opinion of the Island I do wonder why you live here and if you do not live here why you have such interest in our beautiful Island. Most people who live here are proud of the Island and would find your comments offensive. Perhaps you should spend less time at your computer moaning about these things and get out there and try and do things to change the areas that may need improving.
Offensive comment?
I love this Island and am involved in running a tourism business here…if you prefer rose tinted spectacle then thats you loss.
I don’t normally moan about such things, but was prompted to by this post.
I already do plenty to try and improve things thanks
Offensive comment?
…and it is my opinion of tourism on the Island not the Island itself
Offensive comment?
I have a couple of beeches in my garden, but they seem to be in robust health – what’s wrong with the Island beeches, No 5 ?
Offensive comment?
:-)

I am pleased that this guide is getting so much attention, always good to be talked about don’t they say!! I think it looks classy, just what this island needs, we have so much to offer and should be celebrating it. No 5 you admit you run a tourist business is it a “poor quality hotel or restaurant” as you mention previously, you do seem to spend considerable time blogging which I am sure could be positively invested elsewhere. There is always room for improvement and that is the same anywhere in the world. The industry asked and as far as I can see the Chamber has delivered. It would be nice for once to see people pulling together to support the efforts made instead of slating efforts of others…very easy to complain when you dont do the job yourself..perhaps No 5 would like to produce a guide and we could all criticise your efforts publicly, and before you say “everyone is entitled to their opinion”, of course they are, I just think you may have spent too much time and effort on this one.
Offensive comment?
How has the chamber of commerce delivered…it submitted a site (Go Wight) planned to supercede its predecessor…it has failed in it promises and sufferes from under investment ..why..because its predessor run by the council is still up and running and contains all the material (video etc) from the Go Wight site…except it works and gets far more hits…so much for colaboration between COC and the Council.
Now the collaboration is under attack from those who pay for its existance..obviously not wanting to pay twice.
The sensible option is to rely on neither and promote yourself, but these two combatants are competeing for vasts sums of money us small fry can only dream of.
I think the guide looks great and is far superior to those that have gone before..The sad thing is that we have to pay for it.. and its predecessor, not knowing which side is going to win this little battle.
For my penny-worth, I fully support the COC and its attempts to make sense of the tourism puzzle that has been presented to them…
