Newport Roads A Disaster After Snow: Updated (photo gallery)

Tuesday, 5th January, 2010 at 8:51 pm, Isle of Wight

Newport, News, Roads

We’ve just heard that roads in and around Newport are a total disaster due to the snow.

Newport Roads A Disaster After SnowLois Prior called us on 898 777 to let us know that cars are abandoned on the dual carriageway and there are cars stuck at Coppins Bridge roundabout and the surrounding areas, apparently since rush hour.

The snow is still falling in Newport and Lois estimated that there were around two inches of snow on the ground.

We’d love to know how the conditions are in your area. Drop us a line.

Left work at 5.15. Whippingham roundabout jammed all way to Wootton. Thought I’d be clever and go back via Havenstreet. Big accident on Briddlesford Road. Turned round and crawled through Wootton. Cars going up hills one at a time. At Fishbourne, traffic going nowhere so I decided to walk back to home in Ryde. Walked past plenty of stationary cars. Buses at a standstill at bottom of Binstead Hill. Alot of people had come out into street to watch the Skidfest as cars tried to make it up the hill. Stopped a couple of times to help push skidding cars. A real winter wonderland in a weird sort of light. Made it back home about 8.00 and not one snowball hit me.

Hopefully your car won’t have any others parked into it when you go to collect it!

Tues ; I got off the Southampton E. Cowes ferry at 6.55pm, and made the roundabout on the Newport Wootton road at 9.10pm. It took another hour to reach Ventnor, 3 and a quarter hour trip which normally takes half an hour. What was extraordinary about the journey was the demonstration by many motorists of an appalling lack of skill when driving in snow. I spent a lot of time in the Nordic countries in Winter, so I’m used to driving in snow, but I couldn’t believe the number of abandoned cars on roads that were drivable with care. It was interesting to note how many modern cars with low profile tyres were useless in these conditions…

My wife was stuck in Newport by Sainsburys and begged me to come over (from Freshwater) at around 7pm.

I tried going via Shalfleet but that was blocked with cars skewed across the road just after the Horse and Groom pub.

I then tried via Newbridge which was blocked by a Tesco van.

I then tried the Middle Road but there were countless cars stranded by Tapnell Farm and the road was closed by Police so I`ve given up.

    Hope she’s having fun in Sainsburys… it’s a 24hr one isn`t it…. ;)

Any idea where the photos were taken? Can’t quite tell where they are due to snow!

Thanks Lois. I knew it was somewhere around there, but it looks different in snow!

Don’t think I’ll be making it anywhere tomorrow – if cars are littered everywhere, no doubt it will be like dodgems for both the gritters and cars, and the grit won’t do much difference until later in the day if the sun comes out and melt anything – otherwise, it will be icerink if it does stop snowing!

This is certainly a strange island.I’vejust read what you’ve all reported about the snow but when I look out my Lake window I see only a light smattering- and even that is melting away where a car or two has passed.
If it wasn’t for Ventnor Blog I wouldn’t hesitate to set off somewhere by car or motorbike

  6. Left work in Ryde at 6pm and hadn’t reached Binstead by 8:30pm. Luckily got picked up my a friend in a 4×4 and found accommodation for the evening.

I`ve just tried (again) to get to Newport from Freshwater but via the Miltary Road (supposedly it was/is the only clear route from West Wight) and had turn back at Isle Of Wight Pearl as I didn`t fancy getting stuck in the middle of beyond.

Snow plough had been – no sign of grit though, the slush on the roads is now compacted by the plough to form a perfect ice rink.

Incredible that such a small fall of snow grinds this island to a halt.

Had to go from Wootton to East Cowes tonight, both places an absolute mess. No way from East Cowes to Newport and very dodgy getting back to Wootton. It’s madness out there! Cars stranded and abandonded everywhere, vans in hedges…a huge Morrisons lorry left on the side of the road up Lushington Hill! There are people walking everywhere (in the middle of the road as well…hmm. Might be snowing but that doesn’t make it okay) and quite a few trees have fallen over here as well. Had to move one out of the road with the help of a couple of passers by.

I feel guilty to say that I was pretty happy to be in a rather large 4×4 at the time…no trouble getting through it!

Just got back from Newport High Street, the gritters hadn’t been, and the pavements are starting to become slippery where the snow has been compacted and is now ice. If you’re going out wear shoes with a good grip

Thank god for 4×4′s eh Kerri, or many people would be stranded all over the island and mainland. As for global warming, this is surely good evidence that the world’s getting cooler not hotter? Climate change? Pah! Nonsense.
