Parking Consulation Ends Friday: Have Your Say on Changes

Wednesday, 30th December, 2009 at 1:08 pm, Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight Council, News, Planning, Ventnor

As readers of VB and residents of Ventnor will know, a public consultation is taking place at the moment for changes to parking and traffic restrictions in Ventnor.

We first reported on the consultation a couple of weeks ago, which was followed up with a report from the Ventnor Town Council (VTC) meeting, where members of the public voiced their concerns over the proposed changes to parking in St Catherine’s Street.

Removal of 20 parking spaces
Residents in St Catherine’s Street and surrounding roads are angry at the proposed changes which will see 20 parking spaces removed from the road, having a detrimental effect on those using the road, as well as neighbouring roads that are already struggling to accommodate parking for all.

The Isle of Wight Council (IWC) say that the spaces need to be removed to ensure that large vehicles can travel down the road without the risk of damaging a rising gas main, however, residents are damning the knee-jerk reaction claiming that it’s consequence has not been thought through.

Many other changes too
It’s not just St Catherine’s Street where changes are proposed, there are many other parts of Ventnor where changes have been suggested by the IWC. Some could considered improvements, but others do appear to have serious knock on effects for businesses and residents.

Some comments have already been lodged with the IWC, a number of them asking for more parking to made available not less.

You have until this Friday (1/1/10) to lodge your comments, which you can do online.

    Quote from above:
“The Isle of Wight Council (IWC) say that the spaces need to be removed to ensure that large vehicles can travel down the road …..”, and yet the monolith the Council built at a total cost of £18,000 in Tulse Hill now requires that large vehicles can no longer make the left turn into the High Street and many, including the dust cart, now reverse down the Street and then exit by driving the wrong way up into Grove Road.

    So much for road safety.

Obviously, not thought through, bit like the proposed changes in St Catherine Street. Please make comments – if you want to keep your parking, not only in St Catherine Street, East, South, West, North, Dudley Road, Madiera Road, Wheeler Bay, Bonchurch Shute and any roads near to St Catherine street, object, because if we lose spaces in St Catherine Street, we will have no option but to park in your street. we dont want to lose our spaces and we dont want you to lose yours!
