Last Chance For Public Comments on Beachlands Development As mentioned a couple of weeks ago on VB, the Ventnor Town Council (VTC) recently considered the revised application for the development of Beachlands on Ventnor Seafront.

The previous applications had been refused by the VTC, as was this revised version, on the grounds of over-development and not within keeping of the conservation area.

The public have until the end of Friday (1/1/10) to submit their comments on the application for the demolition of the existing building which has sat empty for many years and is proposed to be replaced with four town houses.

Revisions highlighted by agents
Some people who had objected to the previous applications have been contacted directly by the agents for the developer, who draw their attention to changes that have been made to the application.

These include items such as reducing the pitch of the roof from 45 degrees to 30 degrees and changing the ground floor windows, adding railings and shifting the parking to the back of the development.

If you wish to lodge a comment with the Isle of Wight Council, you can do so online or through the post quoting TCP/02147/N, P/00890/09 and sending it to:

There is an ‘architects impression’ photo on the IW Council site

It gives a pretty good idea of what this should look like.

    Offensive comment?

Thanks for that BigEars. Interesting angle to select to create the image from – even makes a large lorry which is considerably closer looks small!

Not many people in town walk around at that height do they? From floor level, the buildings are going to tower over people – just look at how small the estate car nearest to the building looks.

It’s quite simple in my view – the generations-old fragile balance of the Esplanade is ruined by building over two floors.

The Metropole has proved itself to be an over-sized mistake, not a precedent to allow other tall buildings to scar the seafront.

Why is it that developers always have to build higher than the buildings that are there already? (beyond a desire to make more money of course!)

Thanks to Dennis from CPRE for an update, which he left on the VB discussion forum

The planning committee endorsed the officer recommendations to refuse this application today.

    Full details in due course.
