No To CCTV Say Ventnor Town Council

Community, Law & Order, News, Town Council, Ventnor
At Monday night’s meeting of the Ventnor Town Council (VTC), all but one member of the VTC voted against paying for CCTV in Ventnor.
Cllr Mew was the first to speak against the adoption of a CCTV camera.
He was not against the principle of CCTV, but argued as to why the VTC should have to find money in its budget for the camera, when other towns such as Newport and Cowes had CCTV paid for by the Isle of Wight Council.
The camera which would have a life span of 8-10 years would cost around £9,400, a figure that the VTC (and ultimately the tax paying residents of Ventnor) would have to bear.
Cllr Lucas expressed similar concerns. He was dubious of the effectiveness of CCTV and told his colleagues that the cost should be borne by the police and not the VTC.
Cllr Scoccia suggested that a mobile CCTV vehicle be requested for use during one off events such as the carnival. Cllr Lucas proposed that the details be put on file and looked again in 12 months time.
All voted in favour except Cllr George, who abstained from voting on the subject.

it’s depressing that some people think CCTV is needed in ventnor.

We have it in Shanklin, I beieve at a shared cost. we paid for the instalation whilst the Council pays for the monitoring

Well done to the majority of councillors that resisted it!
Why is there need for CCTV in any of the villages on the Isle of Wight? Relatively there really isn’t any crime to speak of.
If the Island can stay free of it – resisting the pressure from central government – it will be a selling point for the Island.

too late…its already in Newport, Cowes and Shanklin. Sandown is next.
Soon Ventnor will be the only place safe to mug people on the streets

”Soon Ventnor will be the only place safe to mug people on the streets”
Hmm Strange comment! So a camera stops people getting mugged does it?
Many crimes happen on this Island but when it comes no needing video footage most of the time the cameras always seems to be pointing in the opposite direction.
The only real purpose I see for these cameras is to help spot cars with no tax mot or insurance gridlocked in our stupid 1way systems and then the control room can contact the police officer at the end of the road and let then know there coming.
Out comes the ticket book. BTW It’s now a £60 fine for not wearing a seatbelt, It was only £30 in May 2009. These cameras have no purpose other than to invade our privacy and make more money from lower and middle class citizens.
I remember when they hid a CCTV camera behind a tree going up the carriageway toward St Marys. I Noticed recently they have cut the tree back so others can now see the camera. They did get over a year and half to spy and gather intelligence. A few people where also sent speeding fines through the post even though they was not stopped by the police. Is this the future we have to come…..
Just try and get your own Video camera out in public, for some reason we don’t seem to have the same rights as them higher up, well we do but when exorcised we are in fear of being branded a terrorist.
WHO GOES? YOU DECIDE!

Would you mug somebody if you BELEIVED you were being filmed.
I’ve lived in places where mugging was a daily event and seen it disapear as soon as camera were installed…did not solve the problem..just moved it somewhere else, but at least we could walk our streets in peace..hense my comment..every where else locally will cameras have except Ventnor.
The cameras in Shanklin are placed to cover areas at risk ( some not even on roads)
If we could have every street and every junction covered I would be happy, after all I’m a potential victim, not a potential thief.
Course I would be much happier if we had beat policeman back on our streets, but then we would moan about having to pay for them

If the ‘if there are cameras there would be no crime’ argument were true, the UK would be as good as crime-free give how many of the things have invaded our country (I’m sure you know that the UK has more CCTV camera per capita that anywhere else on earth).
It’s simple – CCTV does not stop crime occurring.
… and there’s no real crime over the Island (to speak of) that would benefit from CCTV ‘detection’.
They’re an intrusion in a place that doesn’t need them.

how about grafitti and vandalism…which I have seen tripled in five years.
They don’t intrude on my life in any way whatsoever. From running really rough pubs to nightclubs to small country pubs..the CCTV camera has always been my friend

CCTV is an expensive placebo. It is a response which can demonstrate that ’something must be done so something has been done’. Other commenters are correct – things aren’t that bad here really, are they?
Still it’s not often I find myself in agreement with the overseas-funded Taxpayers Alliance: http://bigbrotherwatch.typepad.com/home/about.html

In some areas the cameras put there to ‘protect us from crime’ are now being used to catch drivers stopping on yellow lines, bus stops etc. I know it’s against the law to commit such terrible offences, but expect this nonsense to catch on nationwide. If one enterprising council invents a new way of earning revenue, it’ll soon catch on with all the others. Mind how you park, or even stop. They really are watching you.
