Nodehill School Last Christmas Fair A Great Success

Wednesday, 9th December, 2009 at 9:30 pm, Isle of Wight

Education, Newport, News

We were amazed at how many people went to the Nodehill Christmas Fair last Friday. The place was completely packed.

Nodehill School Christmas Fair A Great SuccessParents and children moved from stall to stall buying and trying as they went.

The main hall had stalls piled high with goodies to buy for Christmas, as well as festive food to chomp on.

The gym had been given over to the pupils who had set up stalls with games on them of their own creation, with a wide selection available. Enthusiastic pupils were happy to show people how to play their games … and collect money from the player, with all money raised going to the school.

Talking to Mr Morris, Nodehill’s Headmaster, he told us that the event was always really well supported.

Sadly with the closure of the school hanging over it, this year’s Christmas fair will be Nodehill’s last.

If you went along to your local school Christmas fair, get in touch we’d like to hear about it.

Well you didn’t, your local school is Ventnor, a school that was placed higher than Nodehill. So much for supporting the local community.

      I think you mis-read that.

They want to hear from people who go along to their local Christmas fete.

No, Simon says “your local school Christmas fair”. Simon and Sal’s child has never been to a local (Ventnor) school. What is wrong with Ventnor schools?

You really have to ask the question, ‘what’s wrong with Ventnor schools?’
You haven’t been following the debate, have you?

And have you seen the latest results for Island middle schools?

Not really sure what you mean about the KS2 results, madinthehead. Ventnor and Nodehill are among the island middle schools that achieved above the England averages in 09 and they’re next to each other in the tables.
Ventnor Blog’s coverage of the results is here, and includes links to the full tables:
            http://ventnorblog.com/2009/12/02/rise-in-isle-of-wight-key-stage-2-results/

The anomaly in there for me was Christ the King’s disappointing results, as that’s the only school in the table that is being allowed to remain open and expand into a secondary school.

I appreciate what Ventnor Blog does to promote not just Ventnor, but the whole island. There’s no need to make personal attacks.

And well done to Nodehill for a successful school fair – just to come back to the original topic.

I chose to send my son to a school that was not my local one, not because I thought there was anything wrong with the local school, but because the one I chose was better suited to his needs. That’s the beauty of having a choice, why should S&S (or anyone else for that matter) have to justify their choice to you?

Because they prattle on about how fantastic Ventnor and its people are and sing its praises to the heavens. Then they drive their daughter as far away as they can, to a school that came just below Ventnor Middle, presumably because they don’t want to mix with the “wrong sort”.
Oh and you lot be eco friendly will you? We’ll ignore it when it suits us!
            I don’t like hypocrisy.

In response to Madinthehead, what I’ve seen (and I’ve been reading the blog for a couple of years) they ‘prattle’ (your words) on about how fantastic the Island is, not just Ventnor.

Your comments come across as very bitter and unnecessary.

You talk of choice but actually you only have the right to state a preference and then you may be lucky if there are spaces available!!! We do not really know how successful this “choice” will be under a two-tier system as it never worked that well for High School places under the three-tier system. My child did not get his “chosen” school at High School and ended up going to the school designated as his encatchment school. Luckily for him this proved to be a fantastic outcome and he had a wonderful and successful time there. I know of other children who only managed to get into their first “choice” high school a few years later when the IW council managed to get the number of school places increased at the popular schools. Some Ventnor children who had not designated their encatchment school as first choice, were initially offered Ryde or Cowes High Schools as there had been a change in the allocation sysyem which meant that if you did not get your first choice which was not your encatchment school, you then did NOT automatically get a place at the encatchment school but had to see if places were available and at which school!
By the way both of my children thrived at Ventnor Middle School and it is a travesty that it will be closing. Nodehill is also an excellent Middle School. It is unfortunate that it is a fact that there are some Middle Schools on the island which are not as good and this did not help the cause to retain the three-tier system.

Sorry to be too “PC” but I hope you got permission from the Head Teacher and parents to publish a photo of the event?
Not too detailed a photo I know, but people can get a bit worked up about un-authorised pics of school children. Not my view, but……………….
