Purple Mango Shanklin: A New Indian Restaurant Opens

Wednesday, 2nd December, 2009 at 2:53 pm, Isle of Wight

Food & Drink, News, Shanklin

We went along to the opening of a new Indian restaurant – the Purple Mango – in Shanklin last night.

Purple Mango Shanklin OpensIt’s a good-sized upmarket venue with quality finish and includes features like a waterfall built into one of the walls.

To celebrate the opening, those there were treated to a free, two course meal.

We were really impressed with the flavour and freshness of the food, as were others who were there.

Given that everyone in the restaurant was served at the same time, it’s a clear indication that the catering for large parties shouldn’t be a problem.

Chatting to the owner, we hear that there’s going to be a delivery service starting in a months time.

It’s on the High Street, by the traffic lights at the top of the hill, near the theatre.

If you do go along, please let them know you heard about it on VentnorBlog.

WE went to Maharajas directly opposite to show our support…I doubt Shanklin will be able to support three Indian resteraunts, so tjheir trade is going to suffer

I have had some truely bizarre ‘Indian’ food since I’ve been on the island. These guys are serving (judging from my limited, but very lovely, exposure to their menu last night)something a lot closer to the real thing. Can’t wait for their delivery service to kick in.

It looks great from the outside – plenty of money spent on it!

Has the owner got other restaurants, as it looks like a slick design, perhaps tried and tested elsewhere?

The Purple Mango in East Cowes does an excellent take away service and the food is of a very good quality.

I went a couple of weeks after their opening night and it does look pretty, you can see where they spent the money. Service was prompt but i felt sorry for the little indian waiter who was clearly new to the place, he’s supervisor was yelling him like he was a an invalid. Poor chap got nervous and dropped beer of another table. I ordered a Rosun Chicken and rice with a garlic nan, to my utter suprise it was a garlic chicken dish just renamed for purple mango,My GF ordered a duck dish. I tucked in and ate it, but to be frank it was missing that something something, chicken portion could be a little bigger and i felt that the dish could have done with more sauce. Our bill came to £38.65 (must of been those big cobra bottles) Its fair to say you can sit in a million dollar room and be dazzled but have a mediocre meal served to you does destroy the illusion.
I hope the Maharaja boys step up their game and blow us away, they must have a plan to outdo Purple Mango.

Maharaja has been in shanklin since god knows when. Yeah ok they have messed up now and then but that’s just human. What really annoys me is that another one opens across the road from them! Flipping heck we have like so many indian restaurant on the island we should rally these guys to invest in ventnor. why spend 100k (im guessing) on such an establishment and compete with someone who has been in the game for donkeys years.
Maybe its the copy cat Indian nature like you get in Birmingham or London where they open side by side, which is fine because there is a constant flow of trade.
After xmas I am going to order that delivery PM has and I will order a Maharaja one too. I will give you 100% honest report on delivery time, price and rate the food so watch this space

Well the Asian newsagent at the junction is now going to have to compete with a new Londis as his direct neighbour.

We here about Big supermarkets driving localas out of business…here we have an example of that greed extending to the smaller ‘names’

Sorry Ebod, i apologise for my remark, i suppose to look at this way : every restaurant has its own set of styles and so do every person/s of this great
Island and some may like mango, some may like maharaja and we let them fight about that. Lets just hope it keeps the quality of food up and the rising prices down. Me thinks its going to be a tough january for my wallet

I have, its fantastic. My favourite is the DEGI MURGH or GOSHT CHANA DHALL
    (lentil)
Tender pieces of lamb or chicken cooked in a pot with onions, capsicum & tomato, chana dhall blanched in spices then combined with fresh coriander. Reduced and slow cooked to give this an authentic taste. (SORRY I JUST COPIED AND PASTED BEING LAZY)
god im feeling hungry, need a private Indian chef in my house. any offers?
