The Great Council Property Sell Off
Tuesday, 1st December, 2009 at 11:23 am, Isle of Wight
Island-wide, Isle of Wight Council, News
As we all know, in order to make savings and help rectify the budget deficit, the Isle of Wight Council are keen to dispose of a number of properties over the coming years that they are responsible for.
The latest document detailing those which are earmarked for possible disposal has been released and surprise, surprise what do we find on it?
Yes folks, amongst many others, we found the Ventnor Coastal Visitor Centre.
Regular readers will remember the article we published last month with the rumour that the building was due to be sold.
The response from Barry Cooke, Head of Strategic Asset Management at the Isle of Wight Council was, “the property review is an ongoing process and no decision has yet been taken in respect of the visitor centre. Any such decision will be taken via the democratic processes of the council. The council is categorically not in discussions with any potential buyer of the site.”
If you’d like to see the list of properties that ‘might’ be sold off, just have a gander at the PDF published by the IWC.

Thought I’d might see Northwood House on the list. The council been banging on about selling that off for ages, have they not?

No mention also of Ryde Theatre, Shanklin Theatre and Ventnor Winter Gardens… does that mean they’re safe??

This list needs looking at very carefully. I have already seen what is described as “former” childrens playground, North Street, Ventnor as to be looked at for redevelopment. This playground is current and not “former” and is in an area already suffering with parking problems. A new development on this land would make this problem far worse as well as rob children of one of the very few areas they can play.

You are absolutely right to say that the list needs scrutinising. Between the entries Newport-St Nicholas Hse and Shanklin- Cemetery Rd, former toilets there is Powys-Llynbrynmair. I suspect this refers to somewhere in Newport, Wales.
I wonder if there’s a job going at County Hall for a proof reader??

Surprised to see the North Street playground described as ‘former’. It has not yet become the former playground, though I expect the Council will let it fall into disrepair and then declare it a Health and Safety hazard. I take my grandson there on the way back from the library, and it is used by those who live in the Longdown area of Ventnor, though maybe not at the moment because of the weather.
As usual, thanks to the Blog for bringing this list to peoples notice.

For information, Llanbrynmair is in Powys on the Cambrian Railway between Caersws and Machynlleth. It took me six hours by train from Portsmouth, via Wolverhampton, last time I went there. The property for sale is a schools’ field studies centre for Island children (the old village primary school) and was purchased in the mid 1980’s to replace a similar centre on the Isle of Arran. There is a smashing Pub in the village, the Wynnstay Arms, with wonderful food particularly local beef and lamb steaks.
