I'm trying (from this and the Unison Web site) to work out what exactly this dispute is about.

What were the council paying? and what are they now proposing to pay?

There is a maximum mileage rate which can be paid tax free, which is intended to cover the cost of fuel and wear and tear on their vehicles. This is a national rate set by Revenue and Customs. Is this dispute about them not being able to claim that rate? or is it about them getting an allowance over and above that, which has now been withdrawn?

As an Essential User or Travelling Officer your continued employment depends upon you continuing to maintain a clean driving licence and having access at all times to a motor vehicle in servicable condition. For this you will be paid a monthly lump sum which will not cover the cost of maintaining your vehicle (tax, insurance and servicing) and a mileage allowance to partially defray petrol costs. Failure to comply with these conditions for a period of three months will result in your ongoing employment being re-examined.

Regret the error in my last sentence above. Too quick on the keyboard or was it just old age?

The cuts in expenditure should start at the top.
Some Top Cats are on £2000-£3000 a week and this does not include all the perks they receive.

However, marching and holding meetings achieve nothing (all you do is wear your shoes out and catch a chill) Gather on the Council car park in the early hours, I feel if they have to find a space... They would most likely go home and the wheels of local government would still turn. It would just highlight how important they are.Just sh r actual use is.
