Some Fastcat Sailings Cancelled on Monday
Friday, 27th November, 2009 at 2:38 pm, Isle of Wight
Crikey, we can’t remember there being some many consecutive problems amongst the two ferry companies before, but following problems with the Portsmouth to Fisbourne car ferry this week, we now hear from WightLink that there will be disruption to service on Monday for the Fastcat passenger service.
Due to “operational reasons” the following crossings on the Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head service on Monday 30 November have been cancelled.
Portsmouth Harbour – 08:40 & 09:40
Ryde Pier Head – 09:10 & 10:10
However an additional sailing will operate from Portsmouth Harbour at 09:15 and from Ryde Pier at 09:45.
As usual, call Wightlink Reservations on 0871 376 1000 for more info.

This must be some conspiracy for wightlink to start saving money by not running the quieter services, I wonder???????????

Call me a cynic, but I think the same. I’ll email Andrew Turner and request he asks the question. It seems highly suspicious that this is happening since the OFT decided not to launch a full investigation.
Unlike other local politicians, Turner has been a real peoples champion on this issue.

albeit completely in-effective

Hardly. They’ve had to explain themselves for starters and now introduced performance statistics, lower fares for students and are looking into the needs of islanders making regular hospital visits.
I’d reckon they’ve also had a shot across the bows on the level of future fare increase. The OFT have said they’ll monitor them in future.

Sounds like someone’s having an awful lot of surgery …. I presume that’s what they mean by operational reasons ;)

It’s amazing how they can predict operational problems that are going to happen in the future!

Yeah, wish I had their crystal ball and I could find out the winning lottery numbers and then maybe I could afford their fares more often!!!!

I guess a major reason why both companies are having more problems is that both companies are trying to do the same timetable as a year ago with less vessels. Wightlink’s St Catherine is now languishing in Southampton, in other years that would have been the Portsmouth to Fishbourne backup. I don’t use them but I think there are less Fast Cats (and there seem to have been a lot of problems with the new ones) and there’s one less Red Jet.

I should think these cancellations are to allow modifications to known issues, after all with only two cats the best way to do it is to cancel the quietest sailings and charter Wight Scene to fill in.

They do seem to have a lot more issues. I heard last week that the internal passenger doors need replacing on the new Lymington ships – at a cost of £20,000 per ship. Bear in mind they also had to replace the safety boats on all three to comply with the MCA failure a few weeks ago.
