Tuesday, 24th November, 2009 at 4:09 pm, Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight Council, News, Politics, Rumour

Update: This has now been confirmed by Cllr Pugh

Rumour: David Pugh Pressures Cllr Churchman Over Scrutiny ChairWe’ve heard rumours that Council Leader, David Pugh has written to Cllr Vanessa Churchman insisting that she steps down as Chair of the council’s Scrutiny Committee, citing the recent Adjudication panel hearings.

We understand that Cllr Pugh has insisted that she resign the position by tomorrow morning and that if she doesn’t he will take it to the full council in the evening.

We haven’t been able to get a comment from Cllr Churchman, but hope to get some details on this soon.

  1. Given that the Chair of this Committee is one left to opposition members of the Council, surely it should be for those members to decide whether Vanessa should continue ? She probably shouldn’t, but it shouldn’t be something imposed by the Ruling Group. Otherwsie what is the point of any opposition involvement in scrutiny ?

Next thing you know they will be banning LibDems from such positions for being politically ineffectual !!!!!

Well out of order, Mr. Wareham! I’m tempted to resort to the ‘report comment’ facility but I suspect that more is achieved by leaving you with enough rope.

Forty (40)IoW Councillors representing thirty-nine (39) wards. In addition there are thirty-three (33) Town/Parishes with over two hundred Parish and Town
Councillors; not to mention the administration staff etceteras, that are involved.

We are vastly over governed and we can not afford to carry all these (servants) of the people.

Is is any wonder there is trouble at-mill?

And when a problem arises, consultants have to be called in, mainly from the mainland.

We need a clear out and a totally fresh start.

I agree Don. And whilst we are doing the clear out, could someone please take a look at the management(?) in our local fire service. It appears their are more chiefs than indians! And talking about chiefs, is it right that the current Chief Fire Officer is to retire shortly at the age of just 55? Nice work (and pension) if you can get it! Why can’t our fire service be managed from the mainland? It would save us tax payers a fortune, and might save a few jobs in County Hall.

If the fire service were managed from the mainland, we would get the minimum service that they could supply without being deemed negligent. As for retirement at 55, if you ever have a fire and your family are trapped and your possessions going up in flames, you better hope that some energetic young people come to your rescue and not some old feller who should know better but is working away the time until his pension.

What do you propose as an alternative, Don. Leave all the decision making to central government? ;-)
btw. Town and parish councillors shouldn’t be costing you a penny.

I just want to see more transparency, more openness and less things being done behind closed doors.

If there has been dishonesty or shenanigans in any department, the electorate should be told, and if it is a serious breach of trust the police should be called in.

At Westminster and in local Councils – ‘Bird of a feather stick together’ – ‘I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine. And look at the mess that
      practice has caused.
