Beacon Health Centre Launches At St Mary’s

Tuesday, 24th November, 2009 at 9:45 am, Isle of Wight

Community, Health, Island-wide

A new GP health centre has recently opened at St Mary’s Hospital, hoping to create a seamless service with the emergency department.

Hospital Getting Back On TrackThe Beacon Health Centre and Emergency Department service opened last Wednesday (18th November) and will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for patients.

Its creation follows a review last year by Health Minister Lord Darzi, the result of which stated that every area in the UK should have a GP-led health centre.

We’re told that the new service was two years in development and will be run by a federation formed by Island GPs, Practice Nurses and Practice Managers.

How will it work?
If you need to use the service just head for the main entrance of St Mary’s Hospital. Regular visitors to the hospital will know that it is shared with Emergency Department. You’ll be dealt with at reception and your condition assessed as to whether you need to see a GP or be diverted to emergency department.

NHS Isle of Wight Chief Operating Officer, Sheila Paul, says: “This is a fantastic new facility which will benefit all Islanders and visitors who are unsure which service they need. With one front door patients will be directed to the most appropriate service and will not have to think is it the Emergency Department or is it the GP walk-in centre that I need.”

As well as the usual walk-in service, we understand that Beacon Healthcare will expand their services over the coming year to include; Family Planning, Healthy lifestyle advice, Minor Surgery clinics and Vaccinations and Immunisations

Alison Richmond, manager of the new Beacon Health Centre, says: “Here at the Beacon Health Centre along with the Emergency Department we bring together the best of primary and secondary care. Our hard working, dynamic teams will be working together to always deliver the very best, most appropriate care, in a welcoming and friendly environment.”
