Vestas “Magic Roundabout” Eviction Court Case 11am Tomorrow (Podcast)

Monday, 23rd November, 2009 at 8:53 pm, Isle of Wight

Green Issues, Law & Order, Newport, Vestas Sit-In

We heard at the weekend that the people staying on the roundabout outside the old Vestas factory received a repossession order to appear in court tomorrow (Tuesday) to evict them.

Vestas Protesters In Court Tomorrow Over Magic RoundaboutThe Magic Roundabout, as it has become known, has had people staying on it since the Vestas building was first occupied during the sit-in in July.

Not only have they been living there, but they’ve constructed a kitchen and are even growing vegetables on there too.

We chatted with Marina Pepper on Saturday at Push the Green Button, who has been there from the very beginning.

She explained that they will be going to court on Tuesday morning with an interesting defence, adding, “We have a right to protest. If we can’t protest on the roundabout, we will ask Vestas to give up some of their land and we’ll protest there.”

The court case starts at 11am on Tuesday in Newport.

All very well, but if we want sympathy from Conservative councillors regarding climate change then I suspect waving flags with red fists on is not the way forward…

Funny… I’ve never seen any flags with red fists on, plenty of flags representing the various Unions but no red fists…
It’s not just the Tories, all the parties need convincing of the urgency. In fact the majority of the populas still need convincing.
There’s also the unresolved matter of the redundancies for the sacked workers. And a near empty factory that was funded with public money.
I’d say that there was still something to fight for.

well said, Jackie, there are plenty of issues still worth standing up and being counted for. As I often say, we should not just do the things that society expects, but to also take the right actions for the sake of society. I for one hope the guys and gals at the Magic Roundabout stay – as Marina said on the interview, they are there to support the local workers and people, and to get climate change and workers rights information out there to where it matters.

Grrrr get rid of the shanty town! It is an eye-sore and you should be encouraging the ex-employees to move on with their lives – it is in their best interests to make a new start and put Vestas behind them.

Any claim they want to make against Vestas is a matter for the courts and will be decided through the courts. The campaign for Green jobs can go on, but not on this roundabout.

There is a lot of sympathy for the sacked guys, but they need support to move on, they don’t need to be sitting on a roundabout outside Gurit over the winter. Nobody needs that!

Are they trying to move on the green supporters on just in case they get involved with the wind turbine application in place on the downs?.

They clearly know the law better than us, maybe the council are now getting worried now with this so near.

I hope the supporters stay & hope they have booked seats for the meeting. ahhh thinking about it….. makes sense now why you have to prebook the seats by ringing the council. Clever!

They already leaked information concerning the upcoming Cheverton Down Planning Decision Meeting to an anti-turbine group 3 days before they published it to everyone else.

Isle of Wight… Eco Island? Yeah Right.

I’m totally behind the Vestas workers, and think we put up a damn good fight, but yes No. 5 I agree, nobody even knows people are camping there anymore. And furthermore, alot of the Socialist and other left wing political groups involved are edging into the climate change debate down here, and while we need every bit of support we can get for the Cheverton wind turbines, people do shy away from Socialist groups.

These political groups have their place, but I don’t think it’s at the forefront of a pro wind turbine movement on the Isle of Wight. At this late stage, the last thing we want is to crack out the SWP banners at the planning meeting.

Banners about eco-island, turbines and being green though, the more the merrier!

Regarding the Magic Roundabout! Sorry to disagree with the statements being made ‘That nobody even knows people are camping there anymore’. Because all those people who truly support the sacked Vestas Workers, unlike the negative segment of our society who comment on this and other sites, know they have never gone away!!

The trouble is Kerri, sympathy isn’t enough and sometimes, in fact most times action is what is required, but then what do I know, I’m just one of the nobodies.
As for the Conservatives, what a good idea, lets have them up the front leading us out of the climate and social problems we face, I’m sure they’ll all be clambering over each other for the opportunity.

I understand that you have all spent time and effort constructing your tent area and protesting. But when will it end. I like the idea that we can all protest. But when it seems to turn into a sort of bully/harrasment tactic where you stall for time and play the “we have rights” card all the time, people get a bit sick and bored. In the end you have achieved nothing you never will and you have cost us, that actualy live on the Island money, when we have to foot the huge Police bill on our council tax. As i said previously i agree with protesting etc. But how far will you go. Will someone get hurt. Will you continue to cost companies money for the inconvenience you cause daily. I stood out there with you in the early days but lost interest when it seened to turn desperate. Keep the fight going but not in this way.
