Red Funnel Lose 53 Staff in Restructure

Friday, 20th November, 2009 at 6:01 pm, Isle of Wight

Cowes, Employment, Ferry

50 Jobs May Be Lost At Red FunnelA total of 53 staff will leave Red Funnel as part of the restructuring which was announced last month.

Red Funnel tell us that 36 members of staff have opted for voluntary redundancy.

A further 17 staff have been made redundant and, we’re told, will leave the company with enhanced packages above the statutory minimum.

James Fulford, CEO commented “I would like to express my thanks to staff leaving the business for their contribution and wish them every success in the future.”

Staff who are leaving have all been told that they will be able to apply for any seasonal positions that become available in the future.

Do these Redundancies include all of the Eastern Europeans that are now working Onboard?
I travelled across on the Car Ferry recently and every single member of Staff in the Restaurant/Bar was Eastern European, they were even talking amongst themselves in their own Language, does this mean they cannot speak English? Is this not a Health and Safety Issue, in the case of an Emergency would they be able to assist or even be able to understand clear instructions. I am not a Racist and i believe that everybody has a right to live and work in what ever Country they choose. But as proved recently with the Red Jet, Emergency Situations do arise, so it would be nice to know when Travelling on the Ferries that we are in safe hands, i think not i,m afraid, if the Staff clearly have poor levels of the English Language.

There was a piece in the County Press on Friday about an alarming incident on the Red Jet, which raised a few health and safety issues:

Having being told about the incident on the Red Jet, I would also have concerns given the fact that it has become obvious that a lot of island firms (to include Red Funnel,) appear to favour employing foreign workers. I second what Ventnorite says regarding people having the right to live and work where they choose but imagine a crisis occuring on one of these boats? Lots of elderly passengers (maybe disabled,) unable to understand the language being directed at them? I guess someone will give us vague assurances on this matter at some point. Shame about B and Q but you dont always take your life in your hands when you go for a tin of paint!!!!
