Many thanks to Tyler Frankling for writing up a review of his time at the BBC Blast when it was recently on the Island. He’s a 16 year old currently at Ryde High – Ed
As many of you may know, BBC Blast was down on the Island last week hosting free workshops to 13 to 19 year olds.
I took part in two sessions – for the first session the BBC Blast team visited my school to do workshops (Radio and Film), for the second, I attended the main workshops held at the Quay Arts Centre.
Film in 2 Days
I participated in the ‘Film in 2 Days’ session, which took place over Thursday and Friday. We had to come up with an idea, draw out a storyboard, write the script, find locations and then we finally got round to shooting the film on the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Then we learnt how to cut the footage down and edit the film inside specialist software, Final Cut Pro.
Our film was then shown at the BBC Blast showcase on Friday, which gave an overview of the workshops that Blast had to offer, and showcased some of the works from those workshops, sculptures, dances, poetry and our film we had produced in only two days.
“Highly enjoyable”
I found BBC Blast highly enjoyable, fun and above all, educational – just what the BBC was meant to achieve. I also met some new friends who were interested in what I was also interested in: film.
Our short film – Dead Creative – can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Recommend
I would recommend BBC Blast to any young person who wants to get into media, performing arts or, who just wants to learn a bit more about something which is fun.
All the people that I spoke to enjoyed the workshops they were in, so it wasn’t just the workshop I was in which was incredibly good fun. And the best thing, Blast was absolutely free!
Last last bit of good news, BBC Blast is apparently going to be returning next year.

Thank you, I’m glad you liked it :)
I hope to keep making small films in the time I’m not doing school work.
