News reaches us that the Cowes Town Waterfront Trust have very generously popped their hands in the pockets and offered to sponsor places for local students at an upcoming climate change conference.
The conference looking at the implications of Climate Change for the South Coast is being organised by The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and being held at Cowes Yacht Haven later this month.
Students in year 12 and 13 are being offered free places to the conference, which would normally cost £150 per person.
Cowes Waterfront Trust are sponsoring places for 20 students and the the ICE are offering free tickets to Isle of Wight sixth form students.
Discounts for Islanders too
If you’re not a student but would like to attend the conference the ICE are also offering discounts for Isle of Wight Residents, a whopping £120 discount, charging just £30 for entry.
Felix Hetherington, Chairman of Cowes Town Waterfront Trust, said: “Climate change is a very important subject, particularly for the youth of today, which is why we are keen to support them financially in attending this important conference.”
John Laverty, Regional Director of ICE South East of England, added: “This event is the first of its kind in bringing scientists, engineers, students and the public together to understand and debate our response to climate change – the biggest risk and challenge we face today. We are delighted that more students will be able to participate thanks to the generosity of Cowes Waterfront Trust.”
What’s it all about?
The conference begins at 9.45am and will start by examining the science of climate change and the scale and immediacy of the problem.
It will then look at mitigation and how civil engineering can help address the problems we are facing as a planet – from flood defence work to imaginative geoengineering proposals such as launching reflective mirrors into Earth’s orbit.
