Emergency Number 112 Runs Pilot for Disabled Users

Tuesday, 10th November, 2009 at 5:43 pm, Isle of Wight

Accessibility, Island-wide, News, Overseas

Many readers will already be aware of the European Emergency Number, 112, which can be used to get in touch with emergency services free of charge all over the European Union.

Emergency Number 112 Runs Pilot for Disabled UsersBrilliant as this is for many users of the service, unfortunately it isn’t accessible to the majority of disabled people.

A new pilot is hoping to embrace the power of the Internet to change this, with five countries taking part to improve communication for disabled users of the service.

How will they do it?
Using the Internet, the pilot will allow disabled users to communicate with each through video, voice and text.

There will be remote interpreting services available to accommodate sign language users and the service will be integrated with existing telecoms platforms and emergency service frameworks.

Where will it be available?
The UK, Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Spain are all signed up to take part in the pilot. If you happen to take part in the pilot get in touch and let us know.

    says:

the uk government wants to disconnect illegal downloaders from the internet.

that means any individual in a household who’s been downloading illegally will incur disconnection for the whole household.

it’ll be bad news for any disabled person in such a household if they get caught up with the proposed retribution.
