As we reported yesterday, Dan Norris MP made a trip to the Island today.

Dan Norris MP Discusses Issue of Fallen Stock (podcast)We caught up with the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) at the National Farmer’s Union in Carisbrooke where he talked to us about meeting the challenge of disposal of dead farm animals.

Mr Norris explained that the problem has arisen due to the isolation of the Island and the cost of transporting carcasses to the mainland for proper disposal.

He gave strong indications that investment might be forthcoming for an alternative to stock being transported to the mainland or being buried.

He indicated that if a long-lasting sustainable solution could be guaranteed at affordable prices for farmers, then investment from the Government could result in positive outcome for the Island.

During the course of the day Mr Norris has spoken to various organisations and officials to gauge the level of commitment to finding a solution that suits all and addresses animal welfare.
