V-Bay Festival: Live Music Extravaganza

Friday, 23rd October, 2009 at 1:14 pm, Isle of Wight

Music, V-Bay Festival, Ventnor, What's On

The V-Bay Festival is due to kick off tonight with the Big Speakeasy at the Winter Gardens, but the music doesn’t stop there.

V-Bay: Live Music ExtravaganzaThe entire weekend offers a chance to capture to magical talent of our Island musicians.

Saturday afternoon sees “In the Music Garden” at Spring Hill Gardens.

Lesley from The Ventnorian has organised an African drum workshop with percussion for children and pirates of all ages.

Take along a picnic and if by chance it rains, it will be held in the Youth Centre on Victoria Street.

Meanwhile down on the seafront, Cephalapod (aka Joe Cauldwell) will be playing his didgridoo and djembe drum in the morning.

Again, if the rain comes, the music won’t stop but will take place in the old Bus Station on Pier Street.

Having just spent my first ever evening in the winter Gardens listening to Phil Taylor play with The Allman Bros Blues Band…and Djing for an hour, I can honestly say what a gem you have. Having run and promoted places like this in the past and having seen the crowd in tonight you have to say that you would have to be stupid to not make money here.

Well done V Bay organisors…now lets see it happen regulaly

I was disgruntled to read your last post as an addition to your first of what started out to be a positive review of a successful event as part of the V-bay festival. How on earth are people to take your review of an event serious when you tar it with such a ridiculous comment about union bunting being a fire hazard. I don’t know who is more to blame, the people at Ventnor blog for publishing an obvious and clear attack at the Winter gardens and its personnel or for the writer of the comments, I think both to be honest.

I am welcome to positive reviews and good topical chat but if your intention is purely to
use this comment section as a cheap shot at the winter gardens and its staff then I suggest you find another way of venting your anger, perhaps possibly in enrolling on a fire safety course so you could then further your limited knowledge on risk assessing and fire hazards.

You really need to get some perspective.

Your “obvious and clear attack at the Winter gardens” comments are well off-target and frankly rather bazaar.

As a publican and venue runner of many years, I was passing a professional comment…maybe from a health and safety percpective you could change them for a less flamable material.

The staff were very proffesional and did a great job under quite a bit of pressure. I also really liked the venue and can see lots of scope for making much more of it.

I haven’t commented before in this debate as I had never visited before.

I Really can’t understand why nights such as these are not held on a more regular basis…there should litrally be similar things happening every week. Unless there is regular and persistant attempts to get people out, they simply won’t come out.

How mush these events make for the venue is pretty much irrelevent (of course there does need to be some money put in the coffers) but if the place is underused then there will be an excuse for it to be closed down. You need people in it at the moment more than you need money..one will follow the other.

I’m not too sure why their seem to be such hostility over what started out a positive report about the Winter Gardens. I do go there myself, not as often as I should but I do live in Ryde, and as many others, the distance between the two seem harder to navigate then going to the Wedgerooms or the Brook.
Yes, there’s always room to improve or adjust to bring in punters. The Winter Gardens do a fine job with limited resources but surely all should embrace all comments and sift through the chaff (not saying what has been written previously is chaff) and find the answers to be successful for 2010 and further.
I feel slightly jealous; after all, you could end up like Ryde Theatre, with no one actively booking events and have nothing going on at all; ready for the excuse to shut it.
What we need collectively, is a Council that wants these venues, then we might, just might get the support these two venues and Shanklin deserve.

You’re going off a little half-cocked there Rog. no.5 was poking a bit of fun and vman had a slight attack of paranoia. Come to think of it, vman showed very similar symptoms to Graham Perks who recently got a little ventilated at a council meeting about a non-existent suggestion of a BNP association by the VB. He also thought it was wrong that people are allowed to say things he doesn’t like in this organ. Probably just a coincidence though.

The previous posts seem to have gone off on a tagent! This article was about the music events organised by the The V-Bay Festival Steering Group (and not about the Winter Gardens!) We would welcome feedback about the MUSIC EVENTS that this article was kindly promoting for us. Good feedback = a better Festival next year!
