Robert Mitchell Trio

Quay Arts proudly presents the highly popular, Robert Mitchell 3io performing in the Anthony Minghella Theatre next month.

Robert Mitchell TrioRobert Mitchell 3io have developed a real signature in this traditional jazz trio format, honing its mix of influences of song, odd metre, freeform jazz, broken beat, hip-hop and folk music with older and more modern jazz/ electronica /rock.

Expect new material and songs off their highly acclaimed album, Greater Good which features arrangements of tunes by Massive Attack (Teardrop), and the famously sampled Galt MacDermot (composer of Hair), along with five Mitchell originals, a tune each by Tom and Richard, and the rarely played Dance Cadaverous, written by Wayne Shorter for his 1964 album Speak No Evil.

In 2009 the trio have played widely through the UK, appeared at Cheltenham Festival 09 (broadcast on BBC Radio, Jazz on 3) and played Netherlands and the 10th Festival Culturel Europeen in Algiers.

They will play the London Jazz Festival again this year, opening for Branford Marsalis. In late October 09 an album of 4Hero covers, produced by Marc Mac, will be released featuring the track ‘Third Stream’ by the 3io.

What others have said
“Accompanied by the metronomic but awesomely complex drummer Richard Spaven and the ingenious electric and acoustic bassist Tom Mason… Mitchell improvises in Herbie Hancockish sweeps but with more input from free-improv and contemporary classical music.”
The Guardian

‘Robert Mitchell creates chamber jazz of astonishing beauty. His music communicates rapt attention, inquisitiveness, high intelligence and refined feeling. Mitchell can be lightning-fingered but usually favours subtlety, his melodies moving seemingly at will through a silence broken by silken cymbals and dark, rhythmically flawless bass. Mitchell is a lyricist and a thinker, and British jazz is far richer for his presence.’
Mike Butler, Metro

“Robert’s had a big hand to play in the development of jazz in the UK, back in the days of Quite Sane, Panacea”¦a very important influential musician, a massively popular record, and a great live performer whose gone from strength to strength. A great composer he’s also made the connection with a lot of new listeners by choices of covers, like Massive Attack, Radiohead, 4Hero..”
Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio
