Vestas Protest: Interview with Caroline Lucas MEP (podcast)

Earlier today, Caroline Lucas, MEP and Leader of the Green Party made a visit to the ‘Magic Roundabout’ (as it’s become more fondly known as) outside the Vestas Blade plant in Newport.

She’d spent a couple of hours chatting to and listening to concerns of the ex-workers and campaigners, many of whom have been camped on the roundabout for several months now.

We caught up with her before she left for the mainland to have a chat about the campaign.

We started by asking Caroline what she thought about the closure of the Vestas Wind Turbine Blade plant.

Her response was to the point “The closure of the Vestas factory an absolute crime.”

She told us that so far, she has seen nothing delivered from Government, pointing out that Ed Miliband could have easily stopped the closure of the factory, but failed in his commitment to the creation of green jobs.

Caroline told us that she thought it was extraordinary that the council promote the idea of having an Eco Island but doesn’t seem support the it with any real action, she was extremely disappointed that it hasn’t done more.

In order to meet the objective of 20% of energy from renewables by 2020, Caroline feels a great deal more wind power will be required in the UK.

She continues the interview by giving us her view future of coal and nuclear power and much more.

Those at the roundabout, some whom might’ve had reservations about her visit, were very impressed with what they saw and heard from Caroline Lucas. She certainly got a thumbs up from the people we spoke to.
