Daft Old Duffer: Ventnor Vapouromiter ChatA National paper has listed the 25 best beauty products for men. Not 25 in total – the 25 best. Which implies a whole lot more items are around dedicated to making the modern male as pretty as possible.

I am not one of those who think a proper man has to be hairy and greasy and smell of sweat. But 25!

All I had was Brylcream and spots.

Weather report
All over the country communities are denying the bad weather of the past year or so has anything to do with them. YOU may be suffering hurricanes, floods, gales and general nastiness, they claim – none of it has anything to do with where we live.

Shelterd by a sunny-side piece of Down, a fortuitous grouping of Leylandi trees or maybe a convenient dip in the road, we enjoy near Mediterranean conditions.

Gentle warm showers, not icy downpours; balmy breezes, not destructive tempests, outdoor barbecues not hot soup.

Such has even been claimed for East Anglia, Thor preserve us! Where snow goes when it’s too warm in Scotland. No such boasting by we of the Wight, of course.

We don’t need to.

All praise the great Island sculptor
The recent upset over the vandalism of the Arreton Hare has reminded us all about all those other wonderful sculptings scattered around our Island.

It also makes me wonder why we -including me – know so little about their creator. Shouldn’t we be honouring him in some way for all the pleasure he brings?

    No red dust storms round these parts, either!

    Brut, yes! Was my older brother’s first aftershave and a whiff of that would rekindle the early ’70s for me instantly. Can you still get it anywhere? (Probably not.)
