Theatre’s Trust Visit Isle of Wight Theatres

Tuesday, 4th August, 2009 at 4:39 pm, Isle of Wight

Cowes, Freshwater, Isle of Wight Council, Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, Theatre, Ventnor

The Theatre’s Trust arrived on the Island yesterday, touring around between Ryde, Shanklin, Ventnor; Medina; Freshwater; Apollo and Trinity theatres.

Ventnor Winter GardensThey have been keen for quite some time to come down to find out what can be done to help the Island theatres, but have encountered difficulties in finding times convenient to senior IW council officers.

We understand that they met with the Friends of Shanklin theatre last night and also had a two hour tour of the Ventnor Winter Gardens.

They visited Ventnor Winter Gardens at the request of its management committee which is made up of Ventnor Town Council members.

We’ll report back when we hear how things went.

They won’t shut down the ‘theatre’ part of Ryde, its the rest of the building that will be converted to residential and retail units.

Hopefully within a short time Shanklin theatre will have a protection order on it, scuppering plans there as well

Being brought up in Ryde, having witnessed the Town Hall fire of 1934, having sung in Musical Festivals there, to consider closing the Town hall, which is the only decent hall in the town is part of the mindless vandelism of this Council.
Ryde Town Council should make a great noise, to retain the Couincil Chamber and the Hall (complete with the famous Walker organ), so that Ryde has not only somewhere to hold all manner of events, but could also rediscover some of its civic pride.
The old saying, “Ryde for pride, and Newport for hot dinners (!), ought still to hold good.
Come on all Ryde folk, make a noise, or you will regret the loss of this fine hall, or its demeaning reduction to amoher sale of our silver to pay for the terrific salaries and unnecessary consultants that seem to abound at County Hall.
Why not restore the mayoralty too, no need to cost thousands?
At the same time to consider selling off Shanklin Theatre in a premier seaside resort is the height of folly. Sandown Pavilion has been lost with its fine stage facilities. We have lost the Margaret Passmore through neglect and lack of vision, and much of this for the cost of a couple of consultants for a couple of weeks.
Where tourism is the only real employer for the Island this Councils seems to wish to destroy all the facilities that a reviving local industry needs.
Incidentally, the farce of the “Ryde Interchange” goes on; what a welcoming sight for ariving visitors.
One wonders if it is at all necessary; rather let’s spruce the old facilites up and put a smile on Ryde pier entrance.
There seems to be plenty of money for other needs, some of them not thought through, and perhaps we need some independently minded councillors (of all parties)to start making noises, rather than lamely follow the party whip (which is a disgrace as far as local government is concerned).
