At the Ventnor Town Council meeting on Monday, John Farrant, who has been the Town Clerk assisting VTC since its inception in 1974, announced that he was ready to step down.

He’ll formally retire on 2 October, 2009.

We understand that John may be the longest-serving town clerk on the Island.

At the meeting the Mayor, Chris Welsford, read out a letter on his behalf, part of which is below …

“I recognise that the Town Council wishes to consider changes in the organisation and operation of their functions, and with this in mind, I have decided that this is an appropriate time to retire from the office of part-time Town Clerk.

“Initially the activities of the Town Council were limited and it has been very rewarding to be associated over the years with the expansion and development of the Town Councils services, which I am certain have been of great advantages to the towns well-being and interest.

“Over the years legislation has increased the importance of the role of local council and this has led to the ability of this council to obtain Quality Status in 2008.

“I offer my very best wishes to the on-going success of the Town Council and give thanks for the pleasure I’ve had working for the last 34 years as Town Clerk.”

Various councillors offered sincere thanks for help that John had given them over the years.

There was applause from the public and councillors in appreciation of his work for the town.

The Mayor said he realised that it was going to be a hard year ahead for him during the period of transition to a new Town Clerk.
