The County Press “Exclusively Reveal” … Competition

The County Press Exclusively Reveal ... CompetitionYou know that we like to keep our eyes on developments at the County Press, watching the changes that they go through.

Well this week something jumped out at us – the phrase “exclusively reveal,” as in “the County Press can exclusively reveal.”

That’s not a phrase we could remember hearing from them before, so we did a little checking with Google and, to the best of Google’s knowledge, the CP has never used it before.

Why not before?
That got us thinking, why would the CP have never needed to use that phrase before?

Because it’s never needed to – it’s been the _only_ text news source on the Island for the longest time and in that position, every piece of news it’s published has been exclusive, by default, as there wasn’t competition.

With them starting to use “exclusively,” they are surely thinking that the Island’s media landscape is changing – that there are other news sources that they need to compete against.

Isle of Wight Radio, for example, has been around a while and if they get the story first, they do the same. Some big stories that are received first deserve to be exclusives, so it is worth mentioning this in the article/report! Is this really worthy of an article on your excellent site?

Of course it was a Freudian slip to use the phrase “exclusively reveal”. Of course they’ve noticed there’s a media shift. Mind you, there is still a place for the so-called “deadtree” media. The CP is useful for their trade adverts when you need them and for the social bits like “hatch, match and dispatch” (births, marriages and deaths” and there are still lots of people who don’t have broadband and always will be. And of course on a national level the Telegraph has been good at investigative journalism revealing corruption at the top which has to be curbed if we are to get out of this Recession and they have been very good at integrating their deadtrees media with their internet site. Until Ventnorblog the Island never had a “daily newspaper” and now we have a very good one.

IW Radio love using this expression, even when they’re wrong.

As all of you, CP, IWR, VB, WIGHTFM, GAZETTE etc monitor each other constantly, nothing stays ‘exclusive’ for very long, sometimes it’s just a matter of minutes, if you’re on the ball.

As with all news gathering, it’s usually the leaker of the subject matter who chooses who to pass on the info first. Most take it in turns.

I think the CP are more cautious with leaks in particular, others are more daring.

So you still listen to IOW Radio?

Surely you should have WightFM on 24hrs
