IW Community Yurt On Show At IW Festival (podcast)

Saturday, 13th June, 2009 at 3:38 pm, Isle of Wight

Island-wide, Isle of Wight Festival, The Arts, podcast

IW Community Yurt On Show At IW FestivalWhile you’re at the Isle of Wight Festival and there’s a break between the music, there’s quite a few other things to look at that have been made on the Island, like an incredible handmade Yurt covered with beautiful, also-handmade felt panels.

VentnorBlog went along to its launch at Medina High School last Wednesday.

The quality and detail of the design of the felt is really impressive.

Sixteen organisations from across the Island have got involved with the project including seven schools.

Those involved with it should be really proud of the quality of the work both on the outside and the structure inside.

It’s going on a tour around the Island, starting at the IW Festival this weekend, where you can also see Erik Phipps’ carved seat.

We chatted to Stephen Lines, Director of Art at Medina and Helen FuGatt, creative agent, creative partnerships about the project.

We’ve got other podcasts coming about the Yurt soon too.

Yes, there are many yurts in the UK, most of them have canvas coverings, or occasionally machine- made, imported felt coverings, which are not decorative. This one is unique on the Island and one of only a tiny handful which have an individually-designed, hand-made felt covering. These yurts, including the Scottish storytelling yurt and the Alachig in Wales are usually community projects.

The Isle of Wight Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers were pleased to make one of the panels for the yurt and we thank Chris Lines especially for all the help that she gave us.

freshwater yurts got a favourable mention in the times :

Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight If you thought it wasn’t possible to be green as well as glamorous, you haven’t tried camping at this wonderful site.

The bell tents and yurts have hardwood floors and double beds. Light the carbon-free charcoal on your personal barbecue and cook yourself some organic treats from the onsite farm shop.

Details: 07802 678591 http://www.thereallygreen holidaycompany.co.uk. £120 for four nights in a yurt during the week in low season to £545 for a week in a yurt in peak season, £195 for four nights in a bell tent midweek in low season and £490 for a week in a bell tent in peak season (full prices:
