Michael McCarthy In Search of Butterflies on The Isle of Wight

Last week, as part of the Great British Butterfly Hunt, the long-standing Environment Editor of The Independent, Michael McCarthy, made his first ever visit to the Isle of Wight.
We reckon from reading his latest opinion piece, that he’s probably wondering why it took him so long to discover our beautiful Isle.
Comments praising the exquisite short-cropped downland of the Ventnor Downs are most welcome, as well as his fascination at the ‘preponderance of Victorian architecture’. If you look past the mention of the abundance of bungalows, McCarthy gives the Island a great tip o’ the hat by comparing it to the wonderful Victorian city of Cardiff.
Articles such as his all add to the positive press the Island seems to be getting over the past few years, so why not read what else he had to say about the Isle of Wight.

What a pleasant surprise to see a piece on Natural History on the Blog. We are indeed blessed with a comparative abundance of butterflies and other wildlife on the Island. I’ve had a lifelong passion for the subject and I can say without doubt that nothing I have seen in a Gallery or Exhibition can match some of the beauty encountered every time I venture into the field. Check out the Glanvilles now from Wheelers Bay to Bonchurch, they’ll be over soon until late April next year.

Nice piece! He didn’t quite get it right about wall lizards though. They’re found in quite a few other UK locations.

wonder if vladimir nabokov visited the IOW?

Nabokov’s compatriot Turgenev certainly spent time in our fine town. I doubt it had anything to do with butterflies, though.
