Hurrah for Island Youth Athletes

Tuesday, 2nd June, 2009 at 10:40 am, Isle of Wight

Overseas, Sports, Youth

Congratulations to the 15 young athletes from the Isle of Wight who have returned from the World Island Youth Games with a record breaking number of medals in tow.

World Island Youth GamesAs we mentioned last week, the 15 young people were competing in the games on the Island of Majorca in a range of sports.

Battling against 17 other islands in the Games, the team returned home with five medals, which we we understand is the largest ever total won by the Isle of Wight since the beginning of the competition.

Roll Call
Congratulations to all the athletes who took part, but particular praise goes to

  • Will Newham who won gold in the 1500m.
  • Callum Woon who picked up two medials, a silver in the Hammer and bronze in the Shot Putt.
  • Nick Percy (from Bonchurch), another double medal winner winning silver in the Shot Putt and bronze in the Hammer.

Isle of Wight Council Community Development Officer Lee Matthews accompanied the team out to Majorca. He said “The Isle of Wight can be very proud of the team who did so well in the face of very stiff competition.

“We had hoped to win a couple of medals, so to come home with more than double the amount we won in 2007 shows how far the Isle of Wight has come and is a reflection of the growing standard of sports stars we have here.

“The World Island Youth Games provide young athletes with an international platform to perform at, giving invaluable experience ahead of the NatWest Island Games and other sporting events. There is no reason why our successful athletes cannot go on to repeat their successes in two years time, when we host the NatWest Island Games”
