Local Elections 09: Ventnor Independent Candidates Invite Public To Q&A

Independent County Council Candidates for Ventnor West and East, Chris Welsford and Steve Stubbings will be holding a good old fashioned ‘husting’ tonight at Ventnor Middle School from 7pm.

Local Elections 09: Ventnor Independent Candidates Invite Public To Q&AWhat’s a husting you might ask? Well put simply, it’s an opportunity for you, the voting electorate, to meet the candidates, hear a brief outline of their aspirations for Ventnor and an opportunity to question them and voice your own opinion on the hot local topics of the day.

As both Steve and Chris are standing as independent candidates they have teamed up and organised the event which is open to voters of Ventnor East and West.

According to the promotional material for tonight’s meeting …

They feel that “asking the people about their views” has become a thing of the past and a sadly forgotten part of the democratic process. If elected, they intend to bring back public meetings on the important issues that affect the town, not just at election time but as matters arise.

By June 4th, between them they hope to have visited every house in Ventnor, Bonchurch and St. Lawrence. However, it may be that you were out when they called and would be interested to meet them and hear what they have to say about their aspirations for our town.

If so, or if you would just like to ask them further questions, then please come to their Election Meeting at Ventnor Middle School on Monday 1st June at 7 pm where there will be a brief presentation by the two candidates, a chance for you to tell them what you want for Ventnor and time for an informal chat.

    Just for info:

    Husting, from the OED:

    4. The temporary platform from which, previous to the Ballot Act of 1872, the nomination of candidates for Parliament was made, and on which these stood while addressing the electors. Hence, contextually, the proceedings at a parliamentary election.

    Bin there, done that with about 35 other people.

    Interesting meeting:
    wind turbines; school reforms; Winter Gardens management (ho ho); Eastern Esplanade planning and the lack of; roads; anti-social behaviour;
    nothing for kids to do; dog poo.

    Vote for them. Nuf said.
