Metal Nature by David Badman
Friday, 8th May, 2009 at 10:43 am, Isle of Wight
| 9, June 2009 | to | 1, September 2009 |
This outdoor exhibition presents birds, fish and habitat, hand-crafted from recycled steel.
Metal Nature is a collection of sculptures inspired not only by the Island and its environment but also by the location of the exhibition space.
All the pieces have been created especially for the area around the Quay Arts Bridge Wall, echoing the life seen on, in or near the River Medina whilst walking its banks.
They are made from reclaimed steel from sources such as reinforcing rod from crushed concrete, steel sheet from scrapped motor vehicles and stainless steel rescued from the scrap bins of the local marine industry.
Badman Background
Born on the Isle of Wight, David Badman has no formal artistic qualifications but has always worked in creative fields.
He trained and worked initially as a screen-printer, then in the mid-eighties joined the creative team at Blackgang Chine; the Island’s well-known theme park.
After eighteen years at the Chine, he decided to work for himself to enable him to spend more time with his wife and two boys.

He currently works on commissions, creating sculptures ranging from hand-held tactile pieces to free standing forms for the home or garden, all made from reclaimed steel and other found or recycled materials.
David also works on various art projects with school children, and individuals with learning difficulties, often as a member of the Ecclestone George group of artists. He also builds detailed interactive archaeological models for places such as Brading Roman Villa.
Gaining inspiration from his surroundings; David is intrigued by man’s impact on the land. He also has a passionate interest in the pre-historic past.
This exhibition promises to be one of this summers most inspiring exhibitions. Smaller pieces are available to purchase from the Quay Arts Craft Shop.
Metal Nature by David Badman runs from: Tue 9 Jun – Tue 1 Sep, Bridge Wall, Quay Arts, Sea Street, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight, PO30 5BD
