This Bank Holiday Sunday, 3rd May 2009, sees the 25th annual Isle of Wight Randonnee.

Isle of Wight Randonnee Cycle Tour This SundayIt’s an organised free cycle tour around the Island – actually it’s two routes, a 100Km one following the Round-the-Island cycle route, taking minor roads and lanes where possible and a 55Km route around the north east of the Island, both anti-clockwise.

Set up in 1984, it’s run by the Island’s own Wayfarer Cycle Touring Club and requires no entry fee, although if you want to donate money towards the cause, they’ll be grateful for your donations.

Six checkpoints
There are six checkpoints that you can set off from Bembridge; Wootton; East Cowes; Yarmouth; Whitwell; Alverstone; Bembridge, which are all open between 9am and 6pm wo/manned by volunteers.

Registration is done on the day at any of the checkpoints and those who complete the route will received a Randonnee certificate and the chance of getting a badge, a silver one this year, to mark the 25th anniversary.

Oh … and did we mention that it’s free entry?

Happy cycling.

ex-Chief Exec spotting prize
There’ll be a prize for any VB reader who spots and gets a photo of ex-Chief Exec of the IW Council, Joe Duckworth, as you may remember one of the things that we learned about him during his sojourn to the Island was that he was a keen cyclist

Full details are available on the Randonnee Web site.
