Isle of Wight Children Gifted and Talented
Wednesday, 14th January, 2009 at 9:19 am, Isle of Wight
An article in the Southern Daily Echo today pitches secondary school pupils on the Isle of Wight as being some of the most gifted and talented in the UK.
Apparently down in the south of the UK we have a higher than national average of exceptional secondary school pupils with figures from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) showing that 13,009 children in the region have been rated gifted and talented.
If you’ve been out of the education system for some time, you may be wondering what criteria is used to determine whether a child is ‘gifted’ or ‘talented’.
According to guidelines, ‘gifted’ refers to excellence in academic subjects and ‘talented’ refers to skills or ability in areas such as art or athletics.
But it’s not just secondary pupils who are showing these great qualities. According to the DCSF, a massive 13,404 primary pupils in the south (11.4 per cent of the total) were also categorised as gifted and talented last year.
Andy Tate has more detail on the figures in his article..

In contrast to this news item, the CP today has a front page story headlined “Island still lagging behind.
“The Island is still below the rest of the country at GCSE level, the latest statistics have shown”. So who is right? Southern Daily Ech or County Press? To quote Harry Hill ” There’s only one way to find out…”

I find at the school I currently study at, the ‘gifted and talented’ are more of the people with money and parents who went to Uni.
It is now all done on ‘FFT – Fisher Family Trust’ who predict your GCSEs via your parents education, your residence location, parents total income etc..hence why the gifted and talented are the rich and those who are, in some cases, stuck up.
They are treated differently throughout their schooling and giving better tutition – the better teachers and therefore have the higher grades.
I believe the IWCP is right, and this article made by the SDE, to be wrong.

Interesting view point Person A.
I understand that SDE article was based on figures released by Ofsted.
