Isle of Wight Celebrates National Tree Week 2008 We love having news from around the Island to share with our readers and the latest from our friends at Goodleaf has just arrived.

During National Tree Week (Nov 26 to Dec 7) they teamed up with the Challenge and Adventure charity and The Countryside Department of the IW Council to work with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.

The purpose of the get together was to try and engage 11 to 18 year olds with low self esteem and help build their confidence whilst educating on the importance of biodiversity.

Last week the group helped to plant a Hornbeam tree which had been supplied by the Countryside Section of the Isle of Wight Council and Island 2000 Trust.

Tina Williamson, Biodiversity Officer for the IW Council gave a short talk about the history of the Hornbeam before the tree planters got stuck in with spades & shovels.

Following on from the planting the group took learning about trees to a new level at a tree climbing session with Goodleaf Tree Climbing.

Phil Wells, Assistant Project Manager – says

“By getting the young people involved in planting this tree gives them an insight into the importance of our surroundings. It was fantastic that later on in the week we were then able to climb trees with Goodleaf that were over 200 years old”

Challenge and Adventure
Challenge and Adventure is a registered charity, set up in 1992. It works with young people aged from 11 to 18 many of whom lack confidence and have low self esteem; some have difficulties engaging with school; and some are at risk of getting in trouble with the authorities.

    a lot of biodiversity,sounds like
    its good for the Planet an our
