Does Freedom of the Press Matter? Latest

Friday, 14th November, 2008 at 8:08 am, Isle of Wight

Community, Island-wide, Media, Site admin

Following our posting about being cut off by the IWC Communications Dept, many of our readers wrote to the IWC expressing their concerns about the situation.

On Monday afternoon many of them received the same statement from either David Pugh, Claire Robertson (Head of Comms) or Gavin Foster (Media Manager). This statement was also read out at the Ventnor Town Council Meeting on Monday evening by Ventnor Mayor, Cllr Susan Scoccia.

VentnorBlog didn’t directly receive this document, but it was forwarded to us by supporters.

Having seen it, we took initial legal advice and are now taking more detailed advice.

We believe that the statement about VentnorBlog, circulated by the Isle of Wight Communications Department, contains untrue information and we have been advised that it is potentially defamatory.

Steve Beynon, Chief Exec of IWC, has been in contact with VB and we plan to meet next week to try and resolve the situation.

    Hmmm. Interesting.
Would you be good enough to publish the apology (or retraction) from the communications department when it arrives?

  4. Be carfull V.B. the council can and will make things up to try and make you look bad.

The council need to understand THEY WORK FOR THE PUBLIC, the very same people who pay the wages, and we have a right to info that might affect us under the the freedom of information act. why are they being so cloke and dagger about this.

Its time for the working class to stand up and demand our freedoms and rights.

The reason they are able to keep doing this is that they know that they can…as regardless of who we might vote for, the ones making these decisions are in a job for life, unelected and in effect unaccountable.

You may see from my email address that I work for IPC Media. I am the Chief Correspondent for The Railway Magazine which is the highest selling railway magazine in the UK with over 100,000 readers.

I have been in dispute with the IOWC over a Planning Application in Shore Road, Bonchurch and a letter and 2 pix were published in the County Press proving my point.

Nobody in the Council apologised or even replied to my recorded delivery letters. Their silence said it all.

Ventnor Blog. Keep up the good work.

    Philip
