Goodman’s Deli, Ventnor Opens
Friday, 25th July, 2008 at 5:35 pm, Isle of Wight
Business, Food & Drink, Shop Local, Ventnor
Great to see so many people going into Goodman’s — the new Deli in Ventnor — on their opening day, today.
Perched on one of the tables, we saw a constant stream of people coming in to taste and drink the delights on offer.
Stacey, Edward and the others working there behind the counter did their best to keep up with the flow of apparently never-ending stream of customers.
Familiar and new faces dropped in to buy meats, cheese, olives and cakes.
It’s a good thing for the whole of town, existing shops included, to have a new, vibrant shop in town serving quality produce.
In quite a revolutionary manner, they’re also open on Sundays between 10-4!

Congratulation Edward and Stacey on a brilliant cafe and deli.
The cafe was bursting when I arrived. Treated myself to some lovely olives and sat down for a delicious latte and slice of cake.
So many places serve latte with frothy milk – they don’t have a clue, glad to see these chaps know what they are doing.
It’ll be a regular haunt for me.

A superb selection of top quality meats, cheeses and other deli items. Coffee’s great, too.
We’ll be regulars and wish Ed and Stacey all the best with this venture.

In the 5 years of life here, we have, for the first time come out of an eatery satisfied with an ‘authentic’ gastronomic experience.
We are so pleased with this new addition and no doubt our daughters, Ananya and Dhyana will have their afternoon snack here as often as possible.
We will also no doubt, stock our home fridge with the cheeses, hams and other yummities on sale here:)
We wish them every success and hope that there are more of this kind popping up everywhere on the Isle of Wight ;)

Fantastic – lets hope all the good food outlets in Ventnor will pull together and make Ventnor a must on the foodie map.
Well done guys – it was buzzing!

What a fabulous new business for Ventnor.
I wish them all the success that they deserve for having the imagination and guts to bring a breath of 2008 business savvy on to our High Street.
Let’s hope others will follow their example.

Clean, bright, good selection of food. Great coffee, so good I went back later for another one. Glad to see they are open on Sundays, there are always loads of people wandering around Ventnor looking for somewhere that is open. Goodman’s Deli deserves to be very successful, I shall certainly be a regular customer.

Brilliant. Excellent to see this new deli in town. Came down from Thorley for the day to enjoy your lovely beach. Super stuff. Good luck to the young couple.

At last, what a great treat it was yesterday to visit Ed and Stacey at Goodman’s Deli. How refreshing to have a new ‘today’ style outlet in the centre of the town and not on the seafront.
If this is what Ventnor regeneration is about – bring on lotz more of the same – preferably in the high street.
Bonne chance mes amis.

I wish all at Goodmans Deli good luck, but I hope they learn from the mistakes of Gurnard Deli which alienated local people, overpriced goods and is now empty of customers and is up for sale.
The Isle of Wight needs top notch Deli s like this and this store looks like a very professional outfit. I for one will be popping in next time I’m in town.

Popped in for a latte, left with hock of ham, dried kippers, olives, cheese, a large cake and muffins. Ate the whole lot last night and coming back for more!!!! Sod the diet when food tastes this good. Good luck to Goodmans. Davina

Fred I can’t see how any comparison could be made between the lovely Ed & Stacey who are local and are selling top quality products at the right price and a business in a very different community. It is so wonderful to have a food outlet in Ventnor full of wonderful items and owners who are clearly very passionate about what they sell and are also very professional – how refreshing.

KS, you make a good point regarding Fred’s comparison with Gurnard Deli, but what the hell has being local got to do with anything? Goodmans have style and substance, lots of product knowledge, and they’re very reasonably priced. That’s it.
Are you saying being local is a prerequisite to being good, fair or reasonable? Such xenophobia belongs to a different age. Being local is irrelevant, and certainly can’t be assumed as a positive label in this area.

Hello all, thank you for your lovely comments, and a big thanks to ventnorblog, suzy and family for all their support. Look forward to seeing you all soon. :)

KS thanx for your reply. The point I was trying to make was this new shop needs supporting, a case of use it or lose it, at a time when deli s across the isle of Wight are closing. I have now had the pleasure of visiting the Ventnor deli and it is first class!

Arbitary I wasn’t saying that at all – I was merely pointing out that they were local which as you say yourself doesn’t always mean something positive. It is always great to see people who have grown up here come back with business ideas showing such enthusiasm and professionalism.

After spending 10 days in Ventnor the highlight of our holiday was visiting the Deli! We purchased many delights when we were there and brought lots home. I would recommend the HAM-PERS as they are hand made loveliness. Look out for the home made bread and ever expandng range of cakes but be warned early arrival is essential!! The quality of produce and service was outstanding regularly giving advice on more exotic items. With such a relaxed atmostphere you could chill out with a guinness latte or an apple cappuccino all day.

Yes, it is an excellent deli. Decent espresso, which is a good yardstick. But best of all they sell 2 gluten-free cakes: a lemon polenta cake and a cherry & almond cupcake. The proprietor was happy to answer questions about the ingredients and even checked with the baker. So very coeliac friendly! Good luck Stacey and Ed!

Just returned home to France after a short trip to Ventnor. It was a delight to find Goodman’s Deli, what an excellent range of european charcuterie, cheeses and other fine foods, they also serve an excellent espresso, probably the best that I have ever had in the UK.
A trés bientôt.

island deli is 10 times better,it sells local products which not only helps there business but other island businesses SUPPORT THE ISLAND COMMUNITY GO TO ISLAND DELI. it’s the BOMB

Hi Slacker. The Island Deli does do great food, as do Goodmans. Both exist in town because they have different offerings, Island Deli supplies island food whereas Goodmans specializes in continental foods. It’s not a question of who is better, Ventnor is blessed to have both.
(Report comment)
Well said Margo, there is room for both.
Just for the record the Goodmans Deli people are locals who have come back to open a great little business. Plus their cakes are the best!
The great service and quality available in Ventnor compares very well with our neighbours in Shanklin. We tried to get a coffee and sandwich in Regent Street recently only to be told very curtly by a member of staff in Grace’s that it was takeway only as it was gone 3.00pm (it was only 3.05!). We then tried Poppins where the staff were too busy reading the CP (shame on them when they could get all there news from the VB), at that point we gave up and returned to Ventnor for a proper coffee and a fine cake at Goodman’s.

Ed and Stacey,
a brilliant and welcome addition to Ventnor’s burgeoning ‘foodie’ reputation. With fantastic produce, excellent customer service/product knowledge Goodman’s Deli will remain a firm fixture on my movements on the Isle of Wight.
10/10

What fantastic young people they both are.

After visiting most of the deli cafes this side of Watford, i would just like to say what a breath of fresh air Edward and Sally are.
This is a winning team.
All the best for the busy future and also with the Harbour restaurant.
Hope to see you both very soon.
