Isle of Wight To Become Butterfly ParadiseGood to read in the Portsmouth News today that according to wildlife film-maker Sir David Attenborough, Hampshire (and that includes the Isle of Wight) is set to become a potential butterfly paradise.

It’s all part of a plan to rebuild the butterfly populations and put a stop to the decline of Britain’s butterflies. As well as Hampshire, there are another 19 areas in the country which will be doing the same

The works starts in the New Forest, which is a national stronghold for the silver-studded blue butterfly.

Branch conservation officer from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branch of Butterfly Conservation, Dr Andy Barker said: ‘It’s not just here in Hampshire that butterflies are vanishing, it’s right across Europe.

‘Butterfly habitat has been destroyed across vast tracts of land by intensification of modern farming and forestry practices, driven by economic pressures.’

He added: ‘We are fortunate in Hampshire to have many landowners with a positive outlook towards wildlife, and some excellent nature reserves that provide ideal habitat for butterflies and other wildlife.

    No, Hampshire doesn’t include the Isle of Wight. Even if Google Maps and BBC News think otherwise. It’s as good as saying ‘Hampshire (which includes Bournemouth)’…

    Although Butterfly Conservation do some good work over here and we do indeed have some fantastic butterflies.

    Which is why we have our own County Council.
    Not sure if that’s a good thing, though.. :-)
