Steve Beynon: Reaction From Melanie Swan

Friday, 11th July, 2008 at 4:20 pm, Isle of Wight

Employment, Island-wide, School Reform

We spoke to Melanie Swan following the SB/CE news and although she was unable to comment directly on the appointment of Steve Beynon as Chief Executive (pending ratification next week by Full Council), but she did express her concern on how the news was released.

I am very concerned that Elected Members were not told of this appointment until more than three and a half hours after all Island schools and staff in Children’s Services.

My immediate concern is about the effect of constant change and uncertainty on our staff and on the Island as a whole. Since the last election, the Isle of Wight Council has had 5 Chief Executives, or Acting Chief Executives, and Children’s Services will now be looking for their fourth Director/Acting Director – all this in just over three years!

It is hard to know how any organisation can function effectively when subjected to such turbulence. This reflects very badly upon the current administration and can only fuel public perception of a leadership characterised by inexperience and incompetence.

Does anyone know when the Press Office knew? Not that they’re talking to VB, of course.. :-)

I regret that I have not seen any Press Release yet James (12th July, 6:37pm). I will enquire and let you know.

A Press Release was sent out approximately 10 minutes after Elected Members were informed of this important appointment, which was about 20 minutes after I asked Cllr Pugh for information. I asked about the Press Release last night and received a copy. I have today, Sunday, forwarded it to all Elected Members so that we are all sufficiently informed to answer questions from our residents!

So it’s not just VB that the press office keeps in the dark? Makes you wonder who is actually on their circulation list, if even councillors have to ask for press releases!
