Short on Petrol: Which Station is Closer?

Short on Petrol: Which Station is Closer? We get requests for the strangest of things sometimes, but every so often we’ll be asked for our opinion or advice on something that turns out to be very useful.

Such a request arrived in our inbox this morning, when we received an email from a fellow Ventnorian stuck with little petrol in her car and wondering which filling station was closer. With Leslie’s in Ventnor no more, would it be Sandford or Whitwell?

Step forward Google Maps. A great service that will show you maps, satellite views and route finders all through a quick and speedy service.

Simply put your start point and destination and Google Maps will work out the best route and give distance and estimated times.

So who won the petrol race? It was of course, Whitwell by .7 of a mile.

Pier Street to Whitwell: 3.6 miles

Pier Street to Sandford: 4.3 miles

Good question, answers could make all the difference.
    From Upper Ventnor, Spar Shopish
    Whitwell 2.81 miles
    Sandford 3.1 miles

ATM you could save a lot more fuel by going to Whitwell due to the traffic lights in Wroxall.

Angie, have you got one of those surveyors measuring wheels? LOL
    2.81? Are you sure?
And I dunno about saving a LOT more fuel, either!
Maybe a tablespoonful. Still, every little helps!
Anyroadup, I’m still pushing for you to have the whole of the Ego Island budget as I’m sure you would put it to better use!
Back to topic, only reason I use Sandford before Whitwell is ‘cos theres more room and if I want air for the tyres, or to use the vac, theres loadsa space!

When i ran out of diesel a couple of weeks ago i was completely stuck and didn’t fancy walking to Sanford or Whitwell. So i went to somerfield and bought a bottle of vegetable oil and it worked a treat. Problem is that it costs nearly the same as diesel per litre.

    Hiya..
I’m the daffy duck that emailed you asking which petrol was closest to me! Thanks – because your reply was much quicker than me Googling it!
One thing to point out…Sandford is open until 10pm (Whitwell 5pm I think) and they do have all those other facilities..and I’m not positive but it’s shorter by an nth of a mile to Newport via Sandord, although I almost always use the Whitewell route.
Leslie station is sorely missed, I hope they’re selling enough cars to make up for our loss and inconvenience.

  5. Great site!

Wish I’d found you a month ago when I first got here. Now I’m due to leave!

I was stunned by the rarity of petrol stations on the island, especially given the large number of cars (and buses). Maybe the mapmakers who put Parkings on their maps should now start putting petrol stations as well.
I mean, it’s all very well for you locals, who know what’s where, but what about we poor visitors?
I burned rubber in a violent U turn when I chanced upon Shalfleet garage .. only the second filler-up I’d seen (Sandford of course was the first) in all my drivings around the island. Even though I’m at Hermitage, I was planning to go back there for my last re-fill…!

Where I come from (New Zealand) just about every village has its pump .. if not several. So its been a bit of a culture shock. I won’t eve compare the prices, because if I did I’d go blind..

But hey, folks, when you live in Paradise you have to take the drawbacks…

Can I put in a word for Sandford? Partly because I know some of the people who run it, but also because we need to make an effort to use the non-supermarket outlets whenever we get the opportunity.

The sudden recent price increases have given the supermarkets a further advantage, and while you can’t blame people for chasing down the lowest prices, this will simply kill off the remaining independents. We Will Be Sorry Afterwards.

And yes, I have been known to use Safeways (as I still think of it) and Sainsburys, but I do mainly use Northwood Garage. I used to use the one at Hale Common, which was very convenient…
