Cheetah Marine: Marine Use Only Clause Confirmed
Saturday, 24th May, 2008 at 12:42 pm, Isle of Wight
Those crazy cats at the council like to give us, the public, a spills and thrills ride, leaving it until late on the Friday (before a bank holiday weekend and prior to the Tuesday Planning Committee) to say that, Yes, there was a cock up in the legal or planning department (obviously they used different wording to this).
There’s been an assurance from Phil Salmon, Development Team Manager that the ‘marine use only’ wording will be re-re-introduced into the draft s.106 agreement at Tuesday’s planning meeting.
“I reiterate that there in no intention to reopen the question of permanent marine related uses of this site. This is something that the Local Planning Authority would seek to resist as a matter of principle.”
Only the consistent badgering of the planning department resulted in this outcome and Professor Russell of the Campaign to Protect Rural England is to be congratulated on his persistence over the previous two weeks.
Many would agree with Professor Russell, when he states
It is a bit alarming to find that the Council has to rely on members of the public to discover the shortcomings of the IW council’s highly-paid legal consultants.
Now let’s get down to business …
Getting this outrageous legal/planning gaff out of the way was the first step – let’s not forget that the planning application didn’t even mention the removal of this vital Marine Use Only clause!
Now this has finally been clarified, the public are able to focus on what the planning applications did actually ask for – the removal of the need to provide the Harbour Master’s office in perpetuity; the desire not to have to build the storage building (where the boat finishing waste was to be placed) ; and the separate amendment to place a dormer window in the main building.
Comment time now extended
The planning department has extended the amount of time that the public can comment on the CM application before the Planning committee meets on Tuesday evening to decide on this application.
Comments should be directed to the planning officer dealing with the case, Stephen(dot)Wiltshire[at]iow(dot)gov(dot)uk . Feel free to CC in VentnorBlog(at)gmail[dot]com .
We’ve written the email addresses in text to avoid spammers taking them. To use them, just take out the brackets and replace with the obvious eg (dot) -> .
We would recommend that you email as well as completing the online form – update: this doesn’t appear to be working.

I would have thought that with the number of cases he chases up, Dennis would be quite used to this lamentable state of affairs.
Interesting to see that Mr. Murphy was willing to slate his staff in the CP, yet he himself has been in place since 8 January 2007 and his Director reckons that there is “no silver bullet” (thats a pity, as I could think of a worthy recipient) and ” it’s like turning round a juggernaut”.
NO IT’S NOT! Just get rid of those who can’t do the job like they do in any other organisation.
Make your views known to the Leader of the Council who is appearing on IOW Radio phone-in this week.

I always knew there would be some fudging over this site. It was sold to them at a
knock out price paid over several years, by which time the site would be classified as ‘brownfield’ and a block of apartments could be built on it. Of course,by that time the boat building would have been found to be ‘uneconomic’ and closed so that’s why they dont want the permanence of a harbourmasters office. Its been suspicious all the way. unfortunately the people who made the deal have long gone.
