Island Council To Be Awarded Charter Mark
Tuesday, 29th January, 2008 at 9:37 am, Isle of Wight
THE ISLE of Wight Council is due to be officially recognised for its good work in making councillors more responsive to the needs of their local community.
Representatives from South East Employers will be awarding a Charter Mark to members of Isle of Wight Council at the beginning of the Full Council meeting on February 20.
The council was assessed by a panel from the mainland including a council officer and member which highlighted the council’s good practice in member development.
Leaders of all the council’s political groups signed up to the programme which ensured that members could access training about their responsibilities and legal duties.
Members are also given training if required about what services a local authority can provide.
The Charter Mark will be presented by representatives from South East Employers. They are Mark Palmer head of improvement and governance and Jennifer McNeill, Regional Director.
The drive to improve member performance was spearheaded by a cross-party working group chaired by independent councillor Muriel Miller.
She said: “I am delighted that we have been recognised for this work – particularly after the recent difficulties regarding Undercliff Drive and future challenges we face together as an organisation.”
“A framework is now firmly in place to ensure that members are aware of their responsibilities and can better serve their communities.”
