As part of the Council’s vision to turn the Isle of Wight into the first Eco-Island, there will be tons of initiatives coming out from County Hall over the next few months.
One which caught our attention last week was the launch of the Big Green Picnic (we’ll be publishing some podcasts later today from the event).
The Big Green What, you ask? The Big Green Picnic (BGP) is set to become the Island’s premier, high-profile, environmental event this year.
Taking place over the weekend of 24/25 May, the BGP aims to inspire the Island’s population to embrace the idea of sustainable living in order to reduce our carbon emissions and help save the planet, man.
So what can you expect to see at the BGP?
Well, there will be all sorts going on over the weekend from 10am-7pm each day. Expect marquees representing local produce, transport, arts and crafts, home and gardening, beauty and health, waste and recycling (natch), energy and water, construction and the natural environment.
On the entertainment front, there’ll be a small music stage with local musicians keeping the happy vibe going throughout the day, as well as other performers.
The organisers hope the BGP will host exhibitions of environmental art, there’ll be a local heat of the solar car challenge (more details to come soon), and if you don’t get round to bringing your own picnic with you, there will be lots of local healthy food to purchase.
If you like getting your hands dirty, plenty of participatory workshops will be running using natural and recycled materials.
Finally, there’ll be a Cinema tent where you’ll get the chance to become better informed through sustainability and green films.
Of course, we’ll bring you more info as well get it, but make sure you stick this one in your diaries and don’t be off the Wight that weekend.

Being that parking on the Council Sea Street car park will be suspended for Council staff from Wednesday evening (21st) has alternative parking been put in place for Council staff or will they be causing disruption and inconveniance to business and shopping on Thursday (22nd) and Friday (23rd) by occupying the majority of the pay and display parking in the town, further incurring a loss of car park revenue ?

Dear Sir,
Given the empirically proven of benefits of angling and catch and release, in having an accredited positive benefit in Youth behavorial difficulties in education and conservation, and the stated objectives of sustainable development with the EA, I find this ommission astonishing as is eco-friendly schemes of river transport in the Medina Valley and the need for a eco-friendly sill for flood relief and traffic congestion as identified in Eco-Island Plan 2008. I trust this ommission will be rectified for 2009.If I or Committee members of existing angling clubs can offer assistance on this and promote and facillitate integration with recreation and education schemes and inclusive initiatives with existing clubs and organisations please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours faithfully,
Adrian Nicholas
