School Reform Discussions Board Opens On VentnorBlog
Tuesday, 15th January, 2008 at 4:21 pm, Isle of Wight
Education, School Reform, Ventnor
The council has taken the decision – as they do with all public consultations, they tell us – not to allow public discussion about the school reforms on their online Forum.
Their logic is that they want people to take part in the public consultation.
We can’t see that if people take the time to comment on the discussion board, that they won’t also take part in the consultation process.
Discussion boards should be a conversation, where people can mull ideas – good and bad – and in turn, potentially modify their own thinking.
Here at VentnorBlog we’re all for open talk – within the bounds of decency, of course – so we’ve started a new discussion board about the Education reforms, where everyone is free discuss their views on the Island’s education.

Standards-Not-Tiers was formed in early 2005 by a group of Ventnor Middle School Parents as a response to the then 2-Tier threat to our primary and middle schools. We have spent the last 2 years engaging with the council on their plans and whilst we did not agree with everything they proposed, until September at least we were being listened to and there was a decent chance of achieving something positive for the Island. We have prepared numerous papers on the subject having researched and analysed the various issues. Our proposed “soft reorganisation” was adopted in part by the council but following the change in the council we have been cut off. We are completely opposed to the current set of consultation options. Any merit that they contain is completely masked by the vast scale of school closures that are in our opinion completely unnecessary. Please visit our website and join with us to fight to save our schools. We need you to get involved – even at this late stage we have lots of ideas to help turn this around. We are talking to other parents groups too and from these discussions many good ideas are emerging. We have an idea to force a referendum on the Island and there is an appeals process that we can utilise, if the worst comes to the worst. Most importantly we intend to convince Conservative Councillors, that they must vote against these mad proposals in March. Remember that most of them won their seats with our help, as a result of their promise not to close primary and middle schools. To make them think again we are going to pay for a full page advert in the CP and we need help with the funding of that advert. We have raised about £650 so far but we need another £1400 or so. Please help if you can. Please go to http://www.yourschoolneedsyou.com and contact us now!
