Flood Warnings For The Isle of Wight
Tuesday, 15th January, 2008 at 4:01 pm, Isle of Wight
THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY and Isle of Wight Council have issued a flood warning to homes, businesses and roads in the Eastern Yar area.
The warning extends to areas including Whitchurch, Newchurch, Alverstone, Sandown and Brading Marshes. River levels are rising today and floodplains are expected to be inundated causing flooding to homes, business and roads.
After heavy rain over night and this morning, in already saturated ground, river levels have risen rapidly. They are expected to stay high for the rest of the day and over night and further rain is expected this evening.
Residents and businesses are advised to take flood precautions by moving valuable objects to higher ground, taking flood precautions to protect their assets and to stay alert to weather conditions.
In addition, the council has had reports from the Environment Agency suggesting that the area surround Monkton Mead in Ryde will also be vulnerable if the forecasted amount of rain falls this evening. Residents in the area are also advised to take flooding protection precautions
Anyone requiring further information or help should call the council’s call centre on 01983 821000.
