Live/Wired First Round: Review

Friday, 11th January, 2008 at 12:06 pm, Isle of Wight

Music, Newport, Review

Goodbye StereoMany thanks to VentnorBlog reader Luigi Forrester, who sent in this review of Wednesday’s night’s CP/Platform One Live/Wired battle. If you have something to say about any event you go to, feel free to share it with our readers by getting in touch. Ed

The IWCP Live/Wired event was held Wednesday evening at The Studio in Newport. A number of top notch bands from around the Island took part after an online voting round beforehand, and the evening allowed the fans to listen to their favourites, together with some new up and coming talent on this wonderful Island.

The evening started with poll winners from the online voting, The Kurves.

The Kurves have only been around for a few months, some members originally from Wroxall. Jamie Fineran appears to be a talented songwriter and the band played some excellent Indie/Americana with the crowd soaking it up. They finished with Alabama Man, the track which gave them the top spot in the voting. Not a bad start to the evening and a very good standard to set for the others.

Second up were The Neurophobics, a Death Rock slash Punk band. The first thing that probably struck a number of punters was the mask donned by ‘Stench’, the lead guitarist. A few tracks later, the masked was changed for a more blood soaked version. Sadly, the band was missing a drummer, and for a Death Rock band, some would consider this unforgivable. It didn’t stop them giving a damn fine performance with ‘Addiction’ being my highlight. Find these guys a drummer now – if they haven’t got one already.

Goodbye Stereo (pictuered above) came up third, a very popular band given their following from the crowd and deservedly so. I’ve come across these guys on MySpace before and recognised a number of tunes in their set. Their Indie Pop sound lit up the room and the youngsters appeared to enjoy themselves. Some refreshingly good song writing and a cracking performance given by the group.

The Shanklin Freak ShowI’ve never seen The Shanklin Freak Show perform live before, but many of my friends have told me what a great performance they bestow upon their folk. I met Dr Dread before they went on, and he appeared to be a decent sport. I don’t think anyone could prepare me for what was to come next, but it was the most enjoyable performance of the evening. A great, unique show – I’ll make the effort to go and see them live again and I suggest you do the same. That is if you like that electro glam alternative stuff which of now I’m pretty much converted.

The final band Nerosis were up. By this time, I’d had more than my fair share of Cafferys but they managed to play some good tunes and the crowd certainly got involved. Maybe I wasn’t the only one drinking after all?!

Next came the results, The Shanklin Freak Show announced as the first band to go through. From that point I knew it was going to be tight. Goodbye Stereo played a good set and newcomers, The Kurves excelled in their spot. It was either one or the other and it was a bit tight to call. Goodbye Stereo deserved to get through to the next round, but I think the future is very bright for The Kurves.

That’s what I like to see, a fair and honest review. Well done for that. One mistake however. Goodbye Stereo were announced then The Shanklin Freakshow as the winners for that heat. Sorry I’m a geek and filmed it on my phone!

I think the live wired compitition was a complet fix.

The judges were biased as two of them are from platform one, the owner of the studio who puts on club nights for platform one was the third judge, I smell a rat.

Goodbye stereo are on the course at platform one and the shanklin freakshow are friends of platform one and they know the club owner very well, need i say anymore.

I think the whole event was a farce and platform one and the county press should be ashamed of themselves.

    Peter – i disagree.

I think that your just annoyed that your band you were “routing” for didnt get through.

Maybe you should tell the band you were voting for to play some decent music. Not that stuff they were playing the other night – middle aged men singing like bloody girls!

    Fools.

I disagree frank, i thought all the bands there were at a good standard.

However, i still have to disagree with peter – i thought the compition was very fair.

Not all music is to everyones taste – and to be honest i couldnt see nerophobics at the festival.

I personally enjoyed the kurves and Goodbye Stereo as this was “MY” type of music.

I also think that all the bands that got through to the live heats will play at the band stand anyway. So, its all good!

I also feel that the way they have run the compition hasnt been as good as last year, as i feel Skyline heroes and Los Fantasmas should have got through to the live heat, there should have been live heats from the beginning like last year.

Furthermore, i feel that this compition has caused a little bit of a pathetic argument – only due to the fact that peoples bands that they “dig” didnt get through – but again its whats going to look and sound good at the festival.

    Cheers.

  11. There are plenty other good bands on the island…including Goodbye Stereo you will see a lot more at The Progression Sessions at Ryde theatre….It’s run to help bands, not get them competing. Live interviews and music played on Isle of Wight radio. Kicks off in March for those who are interested in supporting local talent.

I’ll be popping over to The Progression Sessions at Ryde in March. It’s a shame we’ve seen a bit of mud slinging by a few ‘fans’ but I’m sure this minority won’t spoil it for the rest of us. :)

There has always been plenty of music talent on the Island. All our bands work hard and produce some great music – I suggest you all get out and support other bands as well as your own.

As with the other post on this subject, it’s been great to see so many comments about the event, but we feel that it’s reached it’s natural conclusion now.

Rather than keep going round in circles, let’s close comments on it now.
