History Society Unveil Elgar Plaque

If, like us, you’re someone who walks along Alexandra Gardens on a regular basis, you may’ve noticed that the plaque outside number 3, commemorating Sir Edward Elgar staying there has disappeared.

Don’t worry, we don’t have a plaque thief on our hands, the old one, which admittedly was looking very tired and rusty, has been removed to make way for a brand spanking new one.

This coming Saturday afternoon at 2pm the Ventnor History Society and the Elgar Society will be unveiling a new blue plaque outside 3 Alexandra Gardens to mark the house where Sir Edward Elgar spent his honeymoon in 1889.

For many years the property was a guest house and it is now back to being a single house, the only property in Alexandra Gardens that is not split into flats or a hotel.

Anyone is welcome to go along for the unveiling and meet members of the two Societies and other interested parties.

For anyone interested in more about famous people who have visited or lived in Ventnor (well, it is the centre of the universe!) you should read on.
