Proposed Vehicle Tracking: Your Chance To Say No!
Friday, 9th February, 2007 at 11:14 am, Isle of Wight
Thanks to Irwin for sending through the following info about a government plan to hike up road tax prices. Given that we live on a island and most people rely on their cars to get around, I’m sure it will interest many of you.
I had heard about the tracking devices mentioned below, but had no idea that we had the opportunity to oppose it.
The petition is on the 10 Downing St Website but they didn’t tell anybody about it. It currently has 887,884 signatures. Closing date is 20th February.
Once you’ve given your details (you don’t have to give your full address, just house number in the address box and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you’ll have signed the petition.
Democracy in action?
The government’s proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.
On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.
If you care about your freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10’s new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible.

Hi Sal,
Blimey this is an outrage. I’ve signed the petition and forwarded this post on to my contact list. Democracy in action, I hope.

Great to hear over the weekend that over one million had signed this already. Question is of course, will the government listen?

What will happen to the data about journeys?
Given the governments past record in looking after data, I shudder to think.

We already have a road-user taxation. It’s called petrol! Forgive me for being naive, but if you don’t buy petrol (at hugely tax-inflated prices) you don’t use roads!
After proposals to “insist” we all buy identity cards and now road tracking devices, could Mr Bliar please define “democracy”!
